Post offices to be an election issue
Dublin, Ireland, 9 September, 2001 The future of the rural post
office network is set to become a major issue around the country in
the general election next May. The Irish Postmasters’ Union (IPU) is considering running
independent candidates in four- or five-seater constituencies on
rural issues, including sub-post office closures and health
services. The union is resisting proposals to transform post offices
into commercial outlets, by merging them with grocery shops, petrol
stations or other retail businesses.
Consignia plans pounds 1bn `privatisation'
Consignia, formerly known as the Post Office, is to restructure its
internal operations radically by allowing private companies to manage
operations worth about pounds 1bn a year

Facing a deficit of more than $1 billion this year, Postmaster General Jack Potter yesterday announced the immediate elimination of 800 headquarters jobs and an overall 30 percent reduction in regional management staff around the country over the next several months that could result in several thousand more job cuts.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co., Ltd. (SEMCO), a division of Samsung, to
reengineer and manage its global supply chain.
The three-phase project will redesign SEMCO’s logistics, transportation,
customs brokerage and inventory management for both raw materials and finished
goods covering North America, Asia, Europe and Latin America.
