GPA report shows slight decline in overseas mail

The General Postal Authority (GPA) has reported a slight decline
last year in the volume of ordinary and registered letters sent
overseas as well as in the incoming mail, while ordinary mail for
distribution within the UAE recorded a 33 per cent growth. According
to the GPA’s Annual Statistical Report for the year 2000, 31,900,063
ordinary letters were sent overseas as against 31,948,475 in 1999.
The incoming ordinary mail came down to 66,010,672 last year from
69,538,729 handled in the previous year.

EU demands Belgium change its regulation of postal services

The European Commission said it has launched infringement
proceedings against Belgian authorities demanding that changes be made to the
way EU laws governing the regulation of postal services have been implemented.
The commission said Belgium must ensure the national postal regulator is
fully independent from public postal operators.
