Swissair reaches deal with Belgium on Sabena

Swissair Group, the heavily indebted Swiss aviation group, on Tuesday drew a line under its disastrous investment in Sabena when it reached a settlement with the Belgian government to support a further recapitalisation of the struggling flag carrier. The deal will see Swissair, which has a 49.5 per cent stake in Sabena, inject E258m ($221.5m) into the Belgian airline with the majority shareholder, the Belgian government, funding the remainder of a E430m rescue package.

Presentation by DMA at Direct Media Conference

H. Robert Wientzen, President and CEO, Direct Marketing Association (DMA), made a presentation at the Direct Media Client Summit and Co-Op conference, White Plains, N.Y. “First…let me begin with some statistics regarding the direct mail industry. The direct marketing industry generated $1.7 trillion dollars in sales last year…and direct mail drove $528 billion of that total…which was up 56 percent over sales in 1995. In five years…these sales are projected to approach $820 billion dollars. Now…as for direct mail ad expenditures…. Last year…organizations…for-profit as well as nonprofit…spent $44 billion dollars on ad expenditures relating to direct mail. And in five years…this spending is projected to hit $60 billion dollars. Significantly…the increase in direct mail ad expenditures has been less than the total increase in sales growth. Translated, mailers are taking steps to target their ads to more responsive audiences. Or, put another way, their ad dollars are working harder to generate better returns on investment. Now…all of this is pretty good news for our industry. However…that ‘rosiness’ is tempered by the current economic climate, and it’s tempered even more dramatically by the current state of the United States Postal Service,” Wientzen says.

CHILEAN POSTAL WORKERS THREATEN ACTION

The Chilean Postal Workers Federation has threatened action today,
Tuesday, in response to General Manager Jose Luis Mardones refusal
to meet with union representatives to discuss operational
irregularities in Valparaiso. The workers, backed by center-left Christian Democratic (PDC) Deputy
Maria Rozas, say there have been several strange occurrences since
Mardones was named general manager of the state-owned company last
January. The problems culminated in the Valparaiso workers strike,
in effect since June 8.

Post Denmark, Straalfors Form Mail Company

Post Denmark plans to transfer all printing and mailing business services to a new company to be set up jointly with Straalfors AS, Post Denmark said in a statement. A letter of intent has been signed and the new company is planned to be established by mid-August, with an option for Post Denmark to take a minority stake in the shares.”

Deutsche Post to cut 3,000 mail delivery jobs

Deutsche Post, Europe’s largest postal services group, announced on Tuesday it would cut 3,000 jobs in its mail delivery unit by early next year. The move was widely perceived as an attempt to accelerate cost savings in the division that is Deutsche Post’s largest and most profitable, but which analysts say has the lowest potential for growth.

Watchdog gives Hays a crack at delivery

Competition in Britain’s postal industry shifted up a gear yesterday
when the industry regulator, Postcomm, signalled its intention to
grant a temporary licence to the logistics and support services
group Hays for the provision of three specialist services. Postcomm said the proposed one-year licence would allow it to assess
the effects of certain enhanced postal services while it develops
its longer term policy for liberalisation of the postal market where
Consignia, formerly the Post Office, enjoys a de facto monopoly on
the delivery of mail weighing less than 350gr and costing less than
pounds 1 to send.
