Consignia considers outsourcing operations

Consignia, formerly the Post Office, is considering outsourcing large parts of its operations, including letter sorting and delivery, to enable it to compete with potential private sector rivals. The proposals are understood to have emerged during an efficiency review by KPMG, the professional services firm, as part of Consignia’s efforts to prepare its Royal Mail letters subsidiary for competition.

Lufthansa to sell ground handling subsidiary

Lufthansa, the German airline, has agreed to sell its ground handling subsidiary GlobeGround to Penauille Polyservices, the French business services group. The deal will create the world’s biggest provider of ground handling services operating at 199 airports in 39 countries with a workforce of more than 30,000.

United, American airlines, others in logistics venture

Six leading transportation service and technology providers have formed a joint venture aimed at providing small and medium shippers with the same quality of service that large shippers are able to command – and at similar prices.

United Airlines, American Airlines, Roadway Express, UTi Worldwide, Unisys Corp. and G-Log are partners in the venture, to be called Integres Global Logistics.

Air France reports record profits

Air France said net profit rose 19% in its latest fiscal year to a record €421 million ($360 million). The company said that strong sales growth helped offset a rise in fuel prices and the cost of integrating regional carriers. Revenue rose 19% to $10.5 billion. For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2001, operating profit rose 23% to $378.5 million. That matched analysts’ expectations
