Wrongly addressed mail damages brands says Veridata (UK)

Veridata says that mailing out millions of pieces of direct mail needs to be done responsibly and that it can be a waste of money as well as actually damage a company’s reputation by delivering to the wrong address/recipient effectively becoming an annoyance rather than a way to reach potential buyers.

Veridata, which specialises in providing data capture solutions, says that that around 10 pct of all direct mail fails to even reach its target and that 13 pct of the population move very year. With pressure on direct marketing companies to update mailing lists and reduce the volume of paper that goes to landfill, accurate databases are essential says Veridata.

The UK government has already asked the direct marketing industry to get its house in order or face sweeping measures to curb what some householders and business see as a deluge of unwanted and irrelevant sales literature, and much of the problem is down to companies using old or outdated mailing lists.

Veridata handles returned mail from marketing campaigns, extracting the contents, scanning relevant address, verifying and collating the data and then returns this information to direct marketers to provide up-to-date information which reduces waste.

‘Stop Junk Mail’, the main lobby group calling for strict limitations on junk mail, says that people can reduce the amount they get through their door by opting out. Royal Mail which is the single largest distributor of door-to-door mail does have an opt-out facility although it warns that you could lose important information distributed by local authorities and other organisations.

Postal workers to get red carpet treatment

Fatigue at work can be due to many things, but Correos, the Spanish postal operator, is to make fundamental changes to mail centres which it says will improve staff health and improve productivity.

After succesful trials last year, Correos is to introduce new floor surfaces designed to reduce fatigue and make tasks that necessitate standing for long periods, more comfortable. It had been recognised that hard floors were a problem for many workers and the new surfaces reduce vibration as well as insulating employees from the cold. Seating and tables are also to be replaced where possible, with more ergonomic designs. The introduction of better equipment is also likely to improve conditions for Correos employees.

Over the next five months, most key mail centres will benefit from improved flooring including those at Valencia, Oviedo, Tenerife, Vitoria, Bilbao, Barcelona, Seville, Valladolid, Malaga, Santiago, Granada, Saragossa, the Balearics, Merida, Alicante, and Madrid

Quality of Service Fund extended until 2016

UPU Congress Committee 8 (Development Cooperation) decided to extend the lifespan of the Quality of Service Fund (QSF). Initially scheduled to run from 2001 to 2012, the QSF will now continue until 2016. Created by the 1999 Beijing Congress, the QSF finances projects aimed at improving postal service quality in developing countries. All member countries, except least developed countries, contribute to the Fund through an increase in their terminal dues payments.

In its first eight years, the QSF has financed over 400 projects, worth almost 60 million USD. These projects have helped to raise the quality of the postal services of more than 150 beneficiary postal operators, making the QSF an essential plank of the UPU’s development cooperation system.

The Committee also decided that the link between the Fund and terminal dues should be maintained; that QSF projects should continue to focus on the quality of service of beneficiary postal operators, particularly as regards mail flows subject to terminal dues; and that new elections should be held after the 24th Congress for the 9 countries represented on the Board of Trustees, the body that oversees the Fund.

There is general agreement that the QSF has proven its worth. Extending the Fund is fully in step with the World Postal Strategy. One of its objectives is to improve quality and efficiency in the international postal network. As such, the QSF represents a valuable source of funding for activities relating to interoperability, interconnection and integrity of networks, quality of service measurement, mail security and implementation of cost accounting systems.

This new lease of life will allow the QSF to build on the positive results achieved in the first few years of operations.
