DPD extends Baltic market leadership with new depot

DPD is expanding capacity for its fast-growing business in the Baltic region with a new depot at the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda for international imports to be distributed in Eastern Europe and the CIS region.

In 2007, DPD increased its import volumes to the Baltic countries of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia by 40 pct to around ten million parcels. This helped the GeoPost subsidiary to expand its CEP market share in the Baltics from 23 pct to 28 pct. In domestic shipping within the Baltic States the three companies DPD Latvija, DPD Lietuva and DPD Eesti have a market share of as much as 46 pct.

In order to cope with this volume growth, DPD opened a parcel sorting centre in the free-trade zone of the port of Klaipeda in western Lithuania in May. The depot has a total of 46 loading bays and its current capacity is 2,000 parcels an hour, which can however be expanded substantially. The centre is intended specifically to handle the rising volumes of international shipments which arrive at Klaipeda by sea and by rail from all around the world.

DPD said that it has grown strongly in the Baltic region in recent years. It has established a rapidly growing network, based on an operational infrastructure featuring three hubs, 29 depots and a fleet of 540 vehicles. Within the three countries DPD has a workforce of 750 employees backed up by self-employed transport operators. In Riga the company opened the largest sorting centre of the whole Baltic region only last year, with a sorting capacity of 6,000 parcels an hour.

Royal Mail pays GBP 4 million compensation to customers

Royal Mail paid GBP 4 million compensation to customers in the first three months of the year as complaints rose to 4,200 a day.

The figure included GBP 2.7 million for lost mail, an increase of GBP 1 million on the previous quarter.

It also paid out for damaged goods, late deliveries, failures to redirect mail and letters sent to the wrong addresses.

The total of GBP 4,004,834 in compensation was up from GBP 2.6 million in the previous quarter.

The figures heaped further pressure on Adam Crozier, the company’s chief executive, as union chiefs called for him to go.

Last month it was revealed that, while his basic salary remained unchanged at GBP 633,000, Mr Crozier’s income rose to GBP 843,000 because of a performance bonus and other benefits.

Customers claiming for lost items can claim up to 100 times the 36p first class stamp or the market value of the item, whichever is lower.

Some of the increase in complaints against Royal Mail is thought to be due to industrial action over pay and the end of last year.

FedEx Express Earns FAA Certification for Innovative Flight Safety System

FedEx Express has achieved a milestone in innovative flight safety technology with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification of a new aircraft avionic system that dramatically improves situational awareness for pilots during takeoff and landing—the most critical part of any flight.

FedEx Express is the first major commercial carrier in the airline industry to receive a Supplemental Type Certificate from the FAA for the advanced system, authorizing its installation in the company’s fleet of Boeing MD-10 freighters. The company’s goal for the system is to improve the level of flight safety by increasing visibility of pilots during adverse weather conditions and darkness.

Upon activation of the system, pilots can significantly enhance visibility in poor weather —including darkness, smoke, smog, haze and other weather events—while simultaneously seeing critical flight data. This allows the captain to maintain a heads-up view of his surroundings, eliminating transition time normally needed to look down at cockpit primary flight information. The visual enhancement is similar to that created by infrared night-vision technology used in modern-day defense systems.

A unique application of Honeywell International “Head Up Display” (HUD) technology combined with infrared “Enhanced Flight Vision System” (EFVS) technology of Elbit Systems of America Commercial Aviation-Kollsman Business Unit, positions the system as the leader in the avionic visual technologies market.

Advertising mail at record levels (U.S)

New figures from advertising authority Robert Coen show that advertisers used mail at record levels in 2007.

Mail spending rose 4.0 percent in 2007 to USD 60.998 billion, according to Coen, senior vice president, director of forecasting with Universal McCann, one of the largest advertising agencies in the world,

In the December 2007 issue of his “Insider’s Report,” Coen said that advertisers spent USD 283.88 billion on all media in 2007, a .07 percent increase over 2006. In effect, mail continues to represent one of every five dollars spent by U.S. advertisers.

Coen said Internet advertising increased 20 percent in 2007 to USD 10.92 billion — about one-sixth of the dollars spent with the mailstream. Newspapers took in USD 42.94 billion, down substantially from the USD 47.71 billion spent in 2006.

For 2008 Coen estimates that total ad spending will grow by 3.7 percent to USD 294.38 billion. expenditures for ad mail will grow at an even stronger pace. Coen predicts that for 2008 advertisers will spend USD 63.73 billion advertising through the mailstream, up 4.5 percent over 2007.

The fact is that advertisers will spend more money on direct mail than on promotions through radio, newspapers, magazines, network television, cable TV or the Internet.

According to the Postal Service consumers read 78 percent of the advertising mail they receive, nearly 10 percent respond to offers, and 21 percent bring coupons and ad mail with them when they shop.

DHL Japan fuel-cell car displayed at Integrated Exhibition of the Environment in conjunction with the Hokkaido Toyako Summit

DHK contributed to the display of the Daimler AG (DAG) “F-Cell” fuel-cell vehicle this environmentally-friendly vehicle by Mercedes-Benz Japan Co., Ltd. (MBJ), at the Integrated Exhibition of the Environment in conjunction with the Hokkaido Toyako Summit, which took place at Sapporo Dome from 19 – 21 May 2008.
DHL has been using the vehicle model since July 2006 as part of its ‘Green Logistics’ environmental initiative in Japan.

As part of this initiative – launched in Japan in July 2006 – DHL Japan introduced the F-Cell to its vehicle fleet. The F-Cell, the world’s first mass-produced fuel-cell car, is modeled on the Mercedes-Benz A Class and is powered by compressed hydrogen.
DHL has been testing the vehicle under actual working conditions by using it for the collection and delivery of documents in downtown Tokyo, especially in the bustling Otemachi district.

As of June 16, 2008, the vehicle had logged approximately 10,000km of emission-free operations since its introduction; over the same period, a conventional delivery vehicle would have emitted two tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).
Data from the tests are collected by MBJ for use in systematic improvement and development of fuel-cell vehicles by DAG, the manufacturer.

In Japan, DHL is working to reduce emissions through measures that include introducing more hybrid trucks to its fleet of collection and delivery service vehicles, especially in downtown Tokyo. Meanwhile, DHL Exel Supply Chain – the contract logistics arm of DHL in Japan – is aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by facilitating partnerships between shippers and logistics suppliers through the Green Logistics Partnership Project.
