Parcelnet acquires TNT post’s courier business (UK)

Parcelnet has acquired the courier business of TNT Post. Under the agreement, Parcelnet has integrated TNT Post’s nationwide courier operation and the home delivery contract for catalogue and online retailer JD Williams into its existing UK business, enhancing the company’s network in terms of size and throughput.

Volumes totalling more than 12.5 million parcels per year have been smoothly and seamlessly transferred to Parcelnet – including the long-term contract with JD Williams – with minimal service disruption to customers. Parcelnet has also become TNT Post’s preferred home delivery partner as part of the deal. The extended network size – increasing to 7,000 lifestyle couriers – makes courier rounds even more local and has strengthened
Parcelnet’s presence in London and the south east of England, enabling the company to introduce enhanced service offers in the future. In addition, Parcelnet has taken on 100 full-time employees that previously held field, support and management roles within TNT Post, allowing the company to make best use of expertise and best practise.

Commenting on the acquisition, Carole Woodhead, Managing Director at Parcelnet, said: ”This latest development builds on the acquisition of the Redcats courier business last year, further strengthening our network, enabling service enhancements and providing continued growth of our client base.”

Last year, Parcelnet acquired the UK courier network of catalogue group Redcats. Under the terms of the deal, Parcelnet was appointed to handle the home delivery service for Redcats’ UK brands – notably La Redoute, Empire Stores, Vertbaudet and Daxon.

Government to regulate courier sector, Bill likely in monsoon session

The government will soon amend the Indian Postal Act to bring courier companies under the ambit of this Act, a move that may hit hard the private players but could prove to be a shot in the arm for the Indian Postal Department.

According to sources, the Communication and IT Minister A Raja has given a go-ahead to the department to place the amendment in the Cabinet soon and the amended Act will be introduced in Parliament in the forthcoming Monsoon session.

If approved, this would bar the private courier service providers from carrying packets weighing below 500 grams and could give a major blow to the courier companies which earn a major share of their revenues from letter and packets weighing below half a kilogram.

However, this would also give a chance to both the parties — private courier service providers and India Post– to have business partnership with each other.

Department of Trade officials said this could prove to be a win-win situation for both parties and added that through business partnership India Post will earn more revenues to become self- sufficient.

The government said the India Post Office (Amendment) Bill is being given final touches and is likely to be introduced in the monsoon session of Parliament.

The government is also planning to bring in a regulator called the Mail Regulatory and Development Authority to monitor this sector better.

Department of Trade, which is poised for a face-lift with new schemes in its kitty, also has plans to expand its basket of financial services and may remodel some of the post offices into postal finance marts.

CWU green lights more postal strikes (UK)

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has voted for another round of strikes at Royal Mail, dealing a blow to the direct marketing industry after last year’s strikes cost the sector GBP 8m.
The decision comes despite the CWU’s resolution after last year’s strikes to concentrate on lobbying the government rather than resorting to industrial action.
The vote was held at last week’s union conference, where deputy general secretary Dave Ward called for the dismissal of Adam Crozier and Allan Leighton.
The decision to return to strike action was in response to pension changes, post office closures and job losses at Royal Mail. Last year’s strike action was a major factor in Royal Mail’s failure to meet operational targets.
The strike also put a major strain on the CWU’s finances amid falling membership numbers. The union admitted at last week’s conference that it needs to make some ‘difficult and unpalatable decisions’, and would be looking to identify savings in its budget.
However, the union stressed that it is still in a strong enough position to protect its members’ rights. CWU senior deputy general secretary Tony Kearns says: “Let Royal Mail – or whoever else – be in no doubt that if they take us on we will do whatever is necessary to ensure we are in a position to fight on behalf of our members.”

Postcomm consults on licence for Mr Wesley Pollock (trading as Scotpost) (UK)

Postcomm today began a 30 day consultation on the proposed grant of a postal operator’s licence to Mr Wesley Pollock, a sole trader trading as Scotpost.

Under the licensing framework that took effect from 1 January 2006 and was amended in January 2008, the licence would:

– allow Mr Pollock to provide all types of postal service;
– be issued for a rolling ten year period; and
require him to comply with codes of practice on mail integrity (safety and security of the mail) and common operational procedures (designed to ensure the multi-operator market works well in practice).

DHL announce DHL eMailShip. An award-winning electronic service that provides greater convenience and access to DHL’s shipping services. This service is available for complimentary download from Microsoft Office Online websites across DHL’s Asia Pacific markets.

Microsoft Office Online is a collection of Microsoft Office user resources, such as downloads, templates and clip art, designed to help customers get the most out of their Office System programs.

Launched in October 2007, DHL eMailShip is an easy-to-use service that allows customers to file their shipment details electronically. This paper-less service allows air waybills, shipment forms, customs documents and pickup forms to be prepared offline using the Adobe Acrobat PDF or Microsoft Excel format, and submitted to DHL via email.

USPS sponsor ‘eBay Live!’

The U.S. Postal Service has one question for the anticipated 10,000 small business owners attending eBay Live! 2008 in Chicago: “What are you paying for shipping?”

The Postal Service is the title sponsor of eBay Live! 2008. Through a series of workshops, labs and presentations, attendees discover new strategies, share business solutions and network with other online sellers. The conference is set for June 19-21 in Chicago.

Postal Service employees are on hand to explain new pricing opportunities in domestic, international and online services, working with the theme, “What are you paying for shipping?” Online savings, volume discounts and competitive prices could bring savings as high as 11 percent for eBay shippers, according to the Postal Service. Two international power sellers will demonstrate international shipping options.

All Express Mail and Priority Mail customers can save money simply by going online to purchase postage, including customers using Click-N-Ship at usps.com. Express Mail customers will receive 3 percent off the published retail prices and Priority Mail customers will save an average 3.5 percent.

The Postal Service also is working on a payment solution that allows eBay buyers and sellers to stay on the eBay website to complete financial transactions or print Postal Service shipping labels online. Customers will no longer have to migrate to the PayPal site to conclude business, a convenient solution Anita Bizzotto, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at USPS, said will be available at the end of August.

Carl-Gerold Mende assumes responsibility for the Parcel & Logistics Division of Austrian Post

In the regularly scheduled Supervisory Board meeting of Austrian Post held in March of this year, Carl-Gerold Mende was appointed to the Management Board of Austrian Post, with management responsibility for the Parcel & Logistics Division. He will take office on June 16th, 2008. Carl-Gerold Mende will serve as a member of the Management Board of Austrian Post for a period of three years, with the option of extending his employment contract for an additional two years.

The main reasons underlying the selection of Carl-Gerold Mende for the position on Austrian Post’s Management Board were his impressive career credentials and extensive experience in the logistics sector.

In the light of the increased significance of the Parcel & Logistics Division for the Austrian Post Group and its ongoing internationalisation, Carl-Gerold Mende provides Austrian Post with an optimal basis to successfully operate in the future within the context of a dynamic competitive environment in the European postal and parcel delivery market.
