Consultation Starts On Changes To Post Office Network – Post Office Ltd announces plans for South and West Wales

Post Office Ltd today (Tuesday, 03 June 2008) opened a six-week local public consultation on its Area Plan for the South and West Wales area. In line with the criteria and factors set by the UK Government in its Response Document (DTI The Post Office Network, Government response to public consultation May 2007 – www.berr.gov.uk/consultants), the Area Plan proposes future provision of Post Office services through a network of 291 Post Office® branches across the South and West Wales area, including establishing 19 new innovative Outreach service points, but to close 40 existing branches.

Under the proposals 99.4% of the area’s population will either see no change, or will remain within one mile (by road distance) of an alternative branch.

The local public consultation on the Area Plan Proposal for South and West Wales will commence on 03 June 2008.

The closing date for feedback in respect of the local public consultation is therefore 14 July 2008.

South and West Wales is diverse in nature from the urban, predominantly industrial areas of Bridgend, Port Talbot, Swansea and Neath to the rural, agricultural heartlands of Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. 53% of the population live in rural communities and 47% in urban areas. In order to meet the Government’s access criteria and avoid undue hardship, Post Office Ltd is proposing a future Network in the region comprising 87 branches in urban towns and cities and 204 branches in rural areas.

The defined as deprived have been carefully considered in this Area Plan Proposal, reflecting the specific national criteria set by the Government to give greater safeguards on the accessibility of branches in these communities. Some 31.4% of the area’s total population live in deprived communities, 18.8% of them in urban areas and 12.6% in rural areas. This proposal for future network provision in South and West Wales provides for 42 branches being located in urban deprived communities.

FedEx Express supports European trade growth with hub expansions in France and Germany

FedEx Express has announced two major European hub projects to meet the growing demands of European business—a major expansion to its European hub in Roissy-Charles de Gaulle, Paris, and a state-of-the-art environmentally friendly facility in Cologne.

The expansion at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle by September 2009 and the building of a major new facility at Cologne by spring 2010 will dramatically increase capacity at the two hubs—ensuring that FedEx Express can continue to provide a seamless service for customers who wish to access European and global markets while minimizing impact on the environment.

The European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs stated that in 2007 the European zone recorded its fastest economic growth rate since 2000, and that Europe was sharing in the benefits of the trend towards greater globalization. As manufacturers continue to move towards a global sourcing and production model, the demand for fast and reliable transportation services is increasing, and critical to the growth and success of European industry.

European trade performance brings greater business opportunities both within Europe, and in the global marketplace. FedEx continues to build its network across Europe to support this growth, with sustainable development of its hub facilities across the continent.

The relocation of FedEx Express main hub for Central and Eastern Europe from Frankfurt to Cologne will allow FedEx Express to create a state-of-the-art facility with the very latest environmental design to meet the rapidly growing demand for express services in Germany and Eastern Europe. As FedEx continues limited operations at the Frankfurt International Airport, the new facility will bring new jobs to the Cologne/Bonn region and further improve working conditions for employees.

Japan Post to use only electric cars by '15

Japan Post Service Co., which belongs to Japan Post Holdings Co., announced Monday that it is planning to gradually introduce electric cars to replace and eventually phase out its current fleet of automobiles over the next eight years to help reduce levels of greenhouse gas emissions.

The company owns about 22,000 lightfreight cars that are used to deliver mail and about 1,000 passenger cars that are used for business purposes. It has already adopted some hybrid cars as part of its fleet.

The company’s gasoline costs total about 10 billion yen a year. By incorporating more hybrid cars as part of its fleet the company expects to reduce gasoline costs.

Japan Post said the change to electric cars will be a good fit for short-distance deliveries and business use, due to battery technology advancements. Currently, the company has called for several automakers to become involved in the development of battery operated cars and also approached them to develop battery operated bikes.

It will be necessary for the company to provide recharging points for the vehicles at 1,092 post offices across the country.
