Deutsche Post World Net starts global climate protection program GoGreen

Deutsche Post World Net aims to reduce its carbon footprint for every letter mailed, every container shipped and every square meter of warehouse space used by 30 percent by the year 2020.

To help reduce emissions, the group will gradually replace its air and ground fleets.Today, two-thirds of the company’s 100 biggest customers are already pursuing their own climate protection goals. The reference year for the Goup’s efficiency target will be 2007.

To achieve its objectives, Deutsche Post World Net will progressively modernize its air and ground fleets. About 90 percent of the Group’s air fleet will be replaced by modern, more fuel-efficient aircraft. In addition, state-of-the-art environmental technologies will be used to improve the energy efficiency of sorting centers and warehouses. The use of innovative technologies such as hybrid engines and route planning will be expanded to reduce the fuel consumption of the Group’s road fleet.

The company’s more than 500,000 employees will play a key role in the GoGreen Program: Deutsche Post World Net will start staff awareness campaigns to encourage employees to reduce their carbon footprint at work and at home through measures such as driver trainings or energy-saving classes. Since the climate protection goal for 2020 also applies to subcontractors, the Group will work together with them to develop methods to both track their emissions and identify efficiency-boosting measures.

UK small businesses seek alternative mail service

UK SMEs are looking for an alternative to the postal service as concerns mount over the increased number of local post office closures forcing firms to use expensive courier companies.

A survey by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) revealed that 82 per cent of SMEs believe the closure of their local post office would have a significant impact on their business.

Simon Briault, an FSB representative, said: “Small businesses have limited options for an alternative postal service. The private services that are available have cherry picked the government and larger businesses because they do not make enough money from SMEs.”

The FSB recently called upon politicians to take every possible step to retain the network of post offices and launched a national campaign and petition called Keep Trade Local.

“A large number of SMEs rely on Royal Mail and their local post office, with 94 per cent of them using the service exclusively. Couriers are an alternative service and can be useful, but in rural areas businesses will really suffer,” added Briault.

UPU: ALACOPP joins the Consultative Committee

The Consultative Committee of the UPU has just welcomed a new member: the Latin American Association of Private Posts and Postal Operators (ALACOPP). This association, which is made up of private operators from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Panama, Peru and Uruguay, analyzes opportunities and challenges in the postal sector in order to increase the market for all industry players. The highly fragmented postal market in Latin America is made up of public operators and a large number of private entreprises.

According to ALACOPP’s Executive Director, Marcela MARON: “The challenge before us is for Latin America’s private operators to be successfully integrated into the work of the UPU, and for public and private operators to work together in our region to develop the postal sector as a whole, in order to improve the quality of service.”

The UPU Consultative Committee gives postal players other than public postal operators and regulators a voice in the organization’s deliberations. It consists of non-governmental organizations representing customers, delivery service providers, workers’ organizations, suppliers of goods and services to the postal sector and other organizations that have an interest in international postal services, including direct marketers, private operators, international mailers, philatelic associations and publishers.

As well as being the 25th member of the UPU Consultative Committee, ALACOPP is an observer member of the Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal (PUASP).

French mail competitor gives up

The major competitor to La Poste in the French addressed mail market has closed down its business, leaving the country heading for full liberalisation in 2011 without any real competition, according to the national postal regulator.

Adrexo Mail, part of the Spir Communication publishing group, effectively stopped operating in most French cities on March 31, the regional newspaper Sud Ouest reported. In February Spir had announced it would shut down the company “over the next few months” due to a combination of losses, a difficult operating environment and the delay in postal liberalisation from 2009 until 2011.

The mail company, set up in 2006 with the aim of becoming the top private competitor to La Poste, made an operating loss of EUR 18 million in 2007. Spir’s overall addressed distribution business, incorporating Adrexo Mail and the small B2C parcels company Distrihome, made a combined operating loss of EUR 16.4 million last year on revenues of EUR 59.1 million. In contrast, the long-established Adrexo unaddressed mail distribution business made an operating profit of EUR 25 million on revenues of EUR 244.5 million last year.

During 2006 and 2007, Adrexo Mail set up addressed mail distribution networks in several key French regions, including Paris, Lille, Lyon, Marseille and Toulouse. It had been planning to extend its network to other urban areas including Bordeaux, Nantes, Côte d’Azur and Alsace during 2008.

The effectively liberalised segment of the French addressed mail market open to real competition was narrow, and mainly comprised business mail over 50g for delivery in urban areas. ARCEP estimated that competitors needed a 20 pct market share in this narrow segment in order to cover just their delivery costs, Champsaur said. “Most probably, alternative operators cannot find sufficient volumes to achieve economies of scale necessary to compete with the USO provider.”

Royal Mail migrates entire procurement system online to e-sourcing (UK)

Royal Mail migrates entire procurement system online to e-sourcing making the process completely paperless

“The Royal Mail (RM) procurement team source around GBP 2.1 billion a year in goods and services. In an effort to cut costs, increase efficiency and deliver a higher level of service to British citizens, Royal Mail embarked on a three year transformation programme in July 2006, unify all procurement processes and stakeholders on the SAP E-Sourcing platform.

Previously sourcing was managed via paper files which was hugely inefficient and did not allow strategic visibility of vendors and contracts. With the new SAP E-sourcing platform, Royal Mail has eliminated all manual steps involved in the Source to Contract Process, increased visibility and compliance, enabled vendors to self-register via ‘Vendor Expression of Interest’ and saved the company GBP 300m.”

“SAP E-Sourcing in Royal Mail was rolled out in a phased manner starting in January 2007 with a month on month roll-out process to integrate all the elements of the procurement chain. When Release 1 Contract Management went live there was a cleansing and migration of approx 900+ contracts from the original procurement management system (PMS) to E-Sourcing. An innovative motivation tactic was deployed where different sourcing teams within RM like clothing, utilities, automation etc. competed against each other to be the fastest to cleanse and transfer their data.

Release 2 in June enabled ITT and eAuction functionality. This was a significant move to integrate all stakeholders under a common process leading to a high level of visibility and accountability. In addition to this, Release 2.1 allowed the vendors interested in participating in asourcing events to register electronically and this greatly improved the management & selection process for large scale deals.

Magyar Post commits to the GHG reduction Programme

Magyar Posta joins the Green House Gas Reduction Programme. They are the 15th member to agree to an ambitious average 10 pct reduction of greenhouse gas emissions over the next five years.

The postal sector in Europe, through the very nature of its activities, has an impact on the environment, mostly in the form of greenhouse gas emissions. Most of these CO2 emissions result from the use of road transport, aviation and building energy usage also contributing significantly.

There is however considerable scope for improvement and as a vital sector of the European economy, the postal sector is committed to providing an example, by working closely with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders in order to reduce the whole sector’s impact in Europe and worldwide.

Elaborated by PostEurop’s Environment Working Group under the authority of the Social Responsibility Committee, the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Programme is fully in line with the Kyoto Protocol and the European Climate Change Programme targets. Its aim is to measure and assess the reduction efforts of participating postal operators and to create synergies by exchanging best practices in that field.
