Small Business Leaders Say Economy, Healthcare Should Be Top Priorities

The leaders of America’s small- and mid-sized businesses work long hours, worry about keeping up with the latest technology and aren’t sure whether they should be concerned about the future supply of skilled workers. A new survey shows they also think the economy and healthcare reform are the nation’s most pressing problems.

The inaugural “UPS Business Monitor – United States,” a survey sponsored by UPS and conducted by the marketing insight firm TNS, interviewed 600 managers and owners of small- and mid-sized enterprises (SME) around the country. The Monitor’s first report earlier this month focused on business and trade issues, finding most SMEs have failed to explore sales opportunities outside the United States.

The latest results focus on technology and political issues. More than half of those surveyed want to see stricter immigration laws – even though they say such laws wouldn’t have much impact on their own business. Almost 40 pct say they believe the shift in congressional control to the Democrats will have a “negative impact” on their business. Those surveyed also said they don’t think America’s image in the world would be helped much by electing either a woman or African-American president.

And while they’re bullish on their own individual businesses, only one-third say they expect to add more employees over the coming year.

Among the findings of the wide-ranging survey:

– SME decision-makers work an average of 53 hours a week, with one-third (34 pct) working 60 hours or more.
– Some 59 pct say their top technology worry is just keeping up with the pace of technological change, although 53 pct also worry about Internet security breaches.
– Cell phones are clearly considered the most-needed technology device.
– The respondents are evenly split – 49 pct ‘no,’ 46 pct ‘yes’ – when asked if they expect difficulty in the future finding skilled employees.

Intec signs pan-European data mediation deal with DHL

Intec, a global provider of business and operations support systems (BSS/OSS), has successfully completed the first phase of a pan-European convergent data mediation project at DHL, an express and logistics company.

As part of a long term agreement signed this year with DHL s parent holding company, Deutsche Post World Net, Intec has entered the non-telecom data mediation market in Europe by delivering an integrated solution to DHL.

The project combines the Intec Mediation platform with Intec CEMS (Centralised Error Management System), providing the courier company with a unified platform that can gather, process and distribute its shipping records in real-time, while also checking and identifying information errors that could potentially lead to revenue losses.

Intec informed that the first phase of the project has successfully concluded with DHL s operations in Belgium going live with the platform in August 2007.

DHL plans to roll out Intec s combined mediation and error management system across twenty-four other European countries by the end of the year. The server hosting the mediation platform is based at DHL s IT centre in the Czech Republic.

Developing Countries' Postal Service Needs to be accommodated

Indonesia suggested that members of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) accommodate the service that is applied in developing countries in order to simplify postal shipment among countries. The suggestion was conveyed during the postal regulator meeting conference, which is now ongoing in Switzerland.

Director General of Post and Telecommunication at the Information and Communication Department, Basuki Yusuf Iskandar, said that standard postal service among UPU country members is not equal. “This condition cause difficulties in postal shipment to the destination,” said Basuki in Jakarta last week.

The matter of shipment and standards must be made more comprehensive. Creating these standards became an important issue in the meeting. Acting as the UPU Administrative Council member, Indonesia conveyed the suggestion. “We hope that the conference listens to the voice of a developing country,” said Basuki.

Basuki explained, the standard comprises three types of shipments: physical dimensions (letter and goods shipment), electronic dimensions (shipment via e-mail), and financial dimension (money transfer by electronic transaction).

According to Post & Telecommunication Directorate General’s spokesperson, Gatot S. Dewa Broto, although there has not been any standard applied, the postal condition in Indonesia still has many things to repair. Post in Indonesia is still manual as it hasn’t postal equipment used in other countries.

In addition, shipment service in Indonesia still has many impediments. Thus, PT Pos Indonesia must be aggressive and innovative in their activities. “The impediment level is still high in the link or network between terminals. If we want to develop, we should be able to reduce the delay level,” said Gatot.
