DPD Polska new investment in Poznan

The opening of a new depot in Poznan is one of the company’s biggest investments planned for 2007.

The depot in Poznan is going to be part of the new operational structure, which assumes the functioning of a couple hubs, located in different regions in the country. The network of the biggest sorting centers will be established in the following cities: Gdansk, Warsaw, Katowice, Ùodz and Poznan.

The surface area of the new depot is going to be double the size of the current warehouse and will equal 6400 m². The need for bigger operational space is connected with the new sorting role of the depot for the North-West region of Poland, as well as with the growing number of parcels in this part of the country. City Poznan takes second place in DPD Polska domestic network as far as number of parcels is concerned 9,5 thousand daily.
The new depot will be located near big domestic transport routes, which allow easy access to the hub from all directions in Poland.

The cost of equipment will account for 800 thousand EURO, what includes 300 thousand EURO dedicated for an automatic conveyor belt. The depot will dispose of 13 ramps and 40 courier gates. Currently the depot in Poznan employs around 180 workers. However, along with the depots development, the company will increase number of staff.

Teamsters Eye DHL

With the UPS tentative parcel workers agreement in hand, the Teamsters union is moving onto new ground in the package field.

The union’s national negotiating committee met this month with representatives from DHL to start the “historic task of negotiating a new DHL National Master Agreement,” the Teamsters leadership told its membership last week.

General President Jim Hoffa appointed the national committee, which includes representatives of Teamsters locals from around the country who represent members in every aspect of the DHL Express business. DHL had been covered under the trucking industry National Master Freight Agreement but now is working toward a separate contract.

“While we cannot yet reveal information about specific proposals and discussions, your committee is encouraged by the tone of these talks and DHL’s willingness to negotiate within the framework provided by Articles 1-39 of the National Master Freight Agreement (NMFA),” the Teamsters leaders’ message said.

The union plans to use current contract provisions to “quickly move through the process of negotiating the ‘common clauses’ and begin work on the operational supplements pick-up and delivery, clerical, gateway and hub, as well as allowing each local’s representatives to begin bargaining local riders.”

The new agreement would cover all local unions covered under the NMFA and several locals that previously negotiated stand-alone ‘white paper agreements,’ the message said.

The national bargaining committee is scheduled to negotiate with DHL through the end of October.

Australia Post: Parcels bring in the cash

Australia Post has flagged further investment in its logistics arm to propel its domestic and international expansion.

The parcels and logistics division is now the corporatised entity’s biggest money-spinner, responsible for a big part of the group’s 2006-07 net profit of USD 400.7 million, a rise of 8.7 per cent on the previous year’s USD 367.9 million.

Of the pre-tax profit of USD 561.7 million, parcels and logistics for the second year in a row was the biggest contributor, with USD 255.9 million. Letters, traditionally the lifeblood of Australia Post, had a pre-tax profit of USD 160 million, down 8.4 per cent.

Total revenue from the three core businesses – letters, parcels and retail – rose by 4 per cent to a record USD 4.71 billion.

The postal corporation will pay its shareholder, the Federal Government, a dividend of USD 296.9 million on top of the USD 474.9 million it paid in taxes and charges last year.

Australia Post’s chairman, David Mortimer, said cash flow in the business was very strong at USD 670 million. After the payment of dividends, more than USD 100 million would be available for investment, particularly in logistics.

Parcels and logistics include not just the sending of parcels: the group is increasingly expanding its broader logistics arm domestically and internationally.

The acquisition of JR Haulage, now rebadged Post Logistics Australia, has given the group a solid domestic platform in traditional logistics.

Growth in domestic parcel volume was due to the boom in online shopping, especially of products such as wine, electronic goods, CDs and DVDs.
