Honeywell announces agreement to acquire Hand Held Products Inc.

Honeywell announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Hand Held Products Inc., a privately held Automatic Identification and Data Collection (AIDC) company based in Skaneateles Falls, N.Y., for approximately USD 390 million. Hand Held Products manufactures a range of data collection and communication products designed for mobile, on-site, and transaction processing in retail, healthcare, utilities, transportation, logistics and industry. The agreement is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory review.

Hand Held will become a part of Honeywell’s Security Group within the Automation and Control Solutions (ACS) business. Hand Held had sales of approximately USD 285 million in 2006.

Roger Fradin, President and CEO of Honeywell ACS said, “Hand Held’s growth potential and strong positions in key vertical markets complement ACS’ existing wireless solutions. Hand Held’s ‘customer first’ mentality fits well with our culture. Both cultures value innovation that drives our customers’ success.”

Hand Held’s core products are bar code scanners and rugged mobile, wireless computers that are used for asset-tracking, logistics execution and supply chain management across diverse end markets. The company is perhaps best known in its space for its line of mobile computing and imaging technology used by the U.S. Postal Service, Dillards and Veterans Administration hospitals.

CitySprint announces Axa courier purchase

CitySprint has announced that it has agreed to acquire rival Axa Courier Express.

The deal will see the UK’s largest privately owned same day Courier network discontinue the Axa Courier Express name and brand.

CitySprint, which already owns a seven per cent share of Britain’s same day courier market, claims that the purchase will help to strengthen its position in the sector.

Michael Blanchard, CitySprint regional manager, commented: “Axa represents one of a small number of well-established SameDay courier companies in the Heathrow area.

“Its business model fits very comfortably with CitySprint’s, as it operates with a highly focused customer service ethos.”

Axa currently offers a range of same day courier services to companies in and around the Heathrow area.

DHL launches modern customer service centre in Poland

DHL EXPRESS (Poland) is building the country’s largest customer service center in Lódz, which will provide domestic parcel service. The value of the investment amounts to around EUR 5 million. The contact centre, with 150 employees, is an innovative solution providing complex customer services ranging from taking orders to allocating certain courier routes.

The DHL contact centre is a part of a new model of customer services recently acquired by the company, using innovative technological solutions. It is based on centralizing, integrating and automating the process of receiving orders, including within existing communication channels between the company and customers. Lódz contact centre will be the preferred and dominant contact channel, with more than 80 pct of the total orders submitted and realizing complex customer services in Poland.

‘The new contact centre lets us improve the process of servicing our customers, right up to efficiently centralizing and fully managing processes. Simplifying customer services at the Lódz customer service centre is unique amongst logistics companies in Poland,’ said Tomasz Buras, President of DHL Express (Poland)’s management board.

DHL launches Student Express service

DHL has introduced DHL Student Express, an affordable international delivery service designed exclusively for students going abroad for education.

DHL Student Express assures students of speedy and reliable deliveries when sending documents and parcels such as time-sensitive school applications and personal belongings to their new schools and residences.

Additionally, they can benefit by savings of up to 70 pct on excess baggage for deliveries to popular education destinations like Australia and the UK.

DHL Student Express offers up to 15 pct off prevailing published rates when sending parcels via Jumbo or Jumbo Junior or Express Pallet, and up to 20% off on document shipment rates.

Chief Executive of UPS to retire

United Parcel Service, the world’s largest shipping carrier, said Monday that its Chief Executive, Michael L. Eskew, would retire at the end of the year after six years at the helm and more than three decades with the company.

Scott Davis, Chief Financial Officer, will succeed Mr. Eskew, the company said.

The move was not a surprise, although Mr. Eskew, 58, had not said previously when he would step down.

Mr. Eskew assumed the role of chairman and chief executive on Jan. 1, 2002. Mr. Davis, 55, joined U.P.S. in 1986.
The company also announced several other changes in senior leadership. Replacing Davis as the company’s CFO will be Kurt Kuehn, who is currently Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing and a member of the UPS Management Committee. Replacing Kuehn will be Alan Gershenhorn, who is currently president of UPS International and also serves on the UPS Management Committee. Dan Brutto, who is currently the President of Global Freight forwarding for UPS, is being promoted to the position of president of UPS International and will also join the company’s Management Committee.

Deutsche Post CEO Zumwinkel Confirms 2007 Ebit Guidance

German mail and logistics company Deutsche Post AG at the weekend confirmed its 2007 guidance for earnings before interest and taxes, or Ebit, and despite the uncertain U.S. economy, still sees an increase possible this year.
Chief Executive Klaus Zumwinkel, who was visiting Moscow at the weekend, said he can confirm the outlook now the third quarter has ended; Ebit for 2007 is planned to reach EUR3.6 billion from EUR3.5 billion a year earlier.
Zumwinkel reiterated that it is possible the company will increase its guidance. This was mentioned earlier in the year after the Bonn-based, DAX company delivered its half-year results.
Deutsche Post’s unit Express, like its peers United Parcel Services Inc. (UPS) and FedEX Corp. (FDX) faces a weak U.S. market, said the CEO.
The CEO also confirmed this year’s guidance for the company’s business segments. Express will reach an Ebit of at least EUR400 million, while logistics could reach operating profit of around EUR900 million.
The medium-term goal for the business in the Americas has not been lowered, and Deutsche Post still plans to reach break-even by the end of 2009 in the Americas, he said.
In 2003, Deutsche Post acquired U.S. Express postal service Airborne. After this takeover, the company incurred losses that are valued in the three-digit million euro range. The company said it would break-even on two occasions, but is still to do so.
The CEO has replied to criticism surrounding the losses by saying it is inevitable for a conglomerate with international customers, like Deutsche Post, to do business in the U.S.

Alan will have responsibility for looking at how PalletFORCE’s current models can be improved, and also will be charged with developing innovative new ways of working as the Network looks to diversify in the future. Alan brings seventeen years of experience in the logistics industry, having worked with both logistics companies and end users. He joins PalletFORCE from T-Mobile, where as International Logistics Manager he looked after the distribution and warehousing needs of twelve European countries. Previous employers include Christian Salvesen, Exel Logistics, Kuehne and Nagel, and Tesco.
