FedEx invests to support Manchester economic growth

FedEx Express outlined its growth strategy for the Manchester region which involves the first direct flight from Manchester to the U.S., the creation of 40 new jobs, a new station and domestic express services through its recently purchased operating company, ANC Express.

Officially launching the new FedEx MD-11 wide-body express freighter which flies daily, Monday-Thursday, from Manchester direct to Memphis, Elliott also provided details of a range of FedEx investments aimed at further enhancing the region’s trading opportunities.

Additionally, U.K. domestic express transportation company, ANC Express, acquired by FedEx in December last year, is also helping FedEx customers access the new flight. ANC’s depots, spread throughout the region, will play an important role in picking up and delivering FedEx customers’ packages to Manchester Airport.

FedEx investments also include relocating to a new station in Trafford Park. At 27,000 sq ft., the new purpose-built facility is nearly twice the size of the old facility and is required to meet increased volumes and to support the new flight.

The new station, plus the new flight, means FedEx has almost doubled its workforce in Manchester to 84 while adding 13 new vans and 17 new courier routes to service businesses in and around Greater Manchester.

TNT launches new portfolio of morning delivery services

TNT announces the launch of its new service portfolio to offer customers an extended range of standardized international and domestic services across the globe. Adding two new time-guaranteed services – ’10:00 Express’ and ’12:00 Economy Express’ – to the existing ‘9:00 Express’ and ’12:00 Express’, TNT puts a strong emphasis on morning deliveries and now offers more morning delivery services than any of its competitors. The ’12:00 Economy Express’ in particular is an industry first, providing customers with a service that is both economical and time guaranteed. The new service portfolio is launched globally and will be operational from September 17.

With the new offering, TNT recognizes a universal customer need for guaranteed morning delivery, more choice of services and less complexity through service alignment. TNT conducted extensive research involving 7,500 express service users in key markets around the world. The results demonstrate that, apart from speed, weight and coverage capabilities, customers expect convenience, reliability and control from their provider of express services. TNT’s new range of services directly answers these requirements.

Drawing on TNT’s fully integrated air and road network infrastructure, the new service portfolio offers greater geographical coverage for deliveries by 9:00, 10:00 and 12:00 to more cities and business locations worldwide than before.

TNT is launching an international communications campaign to support its new portfolio. Using the theme ‘Good Morning!’, it combines print and outdoor advertising, viral and direct marketing, online and internal communications.

FEDMA celebrates ten years

FEDMA celebrated yesterday its 10 year anniversary: 10 years of innovation, continued growth, change and development in the direct and interactive marketing industry.

More than 80 high-level representatives from the European Parliament, the European Commission, national direct marketing associations and members attended the cocktail event hosted by FEDMA and supported by Reader’s Digest, Swiss Post International and DHL Global Mail to mark this date.

FEDMA, the Federation of European Direct & Interactive Marketing, was created in 1997 as a result of the merger between EDMA (est. 1976) and FEDIM (est. 1992) and is the single voice of the European direct marketing industry.

“FEDMA has become the voice and driving force of European direct marketing in the past ten years. Using its expertise and comprehensive know-how, FEDMA makes a strong contribution to the further development of the growth industry of direct marketing. Global Mail thanks the dedicated FEDMA team for the valuable support and looks forward to many years of continued cooperation,” said Jürgen Höfling, CEO DHL Global Mail.

FEDMA represents the Direct Marketing sector in all its forms. Its objective is to protect and promote the European direct and interactive marketing sector by creating, through representation, self-regulation and information, acceptance of and confidence in direct and interactive marketing within a healthy commercial and legislative environment in which the sector can profitably operate and develop.

Its national members are direct marketing associations (DMAs) representing users, service providers and media/carriers of direct marketing. In addition to its direct Corporate, Corporate Associate and Company Members, FEDMA represents nearly 10,000 companies through its 27 national DMA members.

The direct marketing sector represents an annual expenditure of over 100 billion euro and employs over 2 million people directly, and many more indirectly, within the EU.

Union urging contract with UPS

United Parcel Service Inc., needs to finish contract talks by Oct. 1 to get an accord in place before U.S. pension laws change in 2008, the union’s lead negotiator said.

The Oct. 1 goal was disclosed by negotiator Ken Hall in a statement posted on the union’s Web site. Atlanta-based UPS and the Teamsters started bargaining in September 2006 to replace a six-year contract that can be amended starting Aug. 1, 2008.

The union is trying to beat the Jan. 1 effective date for federal legislation passed last year to shore up underfunded pension plans. The new law ”could affect members’ retirement security,” Hall said, without elaborating.

A quick agreement would help UPS, the world’s biggest package-delivery company, keep customers from diverting business to rival FedEx Corp. on concern about a possible strike, Hurd said. UPS employs 240,000 Teamsters members.

Royal Mail condemns CWU threat of further strike action

Royal Mail is disappointed that, despite a four week “period of calm” to allow talks to take place, the Communication Workers Union continues to ignore the stark challenges facing the company and has announced they will call further strikes. The CWU’s decision is in spite of Royal Mail offering the union a short term resolution to the dispute, within the amount of money available for pay this year and at no extra cost to the company, as well as a longer term solution which we believe is in the interests of our people, our customers and the future of business.

During the talks we also made it clear to the CWU that our clear aim in consulting on pensions is to protect our existing people’s pensions as far as possible and not increase their contributions – while the union wants to keep the scheme open to new recruits, even though they know it will disadvantage the postmen and postwomen who already work for the company.

Royal Mail has also offered that any postmen and postwomen affected by changes in their starting time because of new EU transport legislation will keep their early start allowance for as long as they continue in their current job even though they will be starting later. Our aim in making this offer is to ensure the postmen and postwomen affected do not lose money as a result of the change – but the union is opposed to this offer.

The union’s stance on such issues does not reflect the views and interests of the vast majority of our people but rather the interest of activists within the CWU. We will be talking to our people over the next few days as we decide how to make progress on these issues.

Philpost : Post office wants bond float to pay debt

The Philippine Postal Corp. (Philpost) is planning to issue P2 billion worth of bonds to pay off debts incurred by its defunct subsidiary, the state-owned company’s head said in an interview.

Postmaster General Hector R. R. Villanueva said his agency wants to clean up its balance sheet.

The company will issue the bonds in two years when its modernization program is in place.

Mr. Villanueva said the Philpost subsidiary had accumulated about P2 billion in debts.

Mr. Villanueva earlier said the government would to generate at least P10 billion from the sale of Philpost following the agency’s P5.7-billion computerization project, which is expected to improve operations.

The company last year inked a build-lease-transfer agreement with Japanese information technology giant ROA Systems Co. Ltd. to computerize Philpost’s operations and interconnect 2,000 post offices. The project will be completed in two years.

Mr. Villanueva said Philpost needs to raise its standards to be at par with Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia, whose postal systems are modernized.

Philpost operates more than 2,000 post offices, distribution centers, and mailing outlets all over the country. It has a work force of 13,000 employees and owns more than 2,500 mail vans and motorcycles.

Last year, the agency reported a net profit to P46 million due mainly to cost-cutting measures. This year, it expects about P147 million in net incomes.

The Japanese firm will computerize the Philippine postal system by leasing computers and other equipment.

It will build and maintain modern postal applications and business systems for a period of nine years at no cost to Philpost.

With computers and new business systems, Philpost revenues are projected to rise to P13 billion, on top of about P3.5 billion it makes annually.
