Supply Chain Consulting launches CarbonView technology for green supply chains

Supply Chain Consulting has announced the US launch of CarbonView, a solution that helps companies to evaluate and implement pragmatic green strategies while simultaneously improving their business performance.

The new solution will be featured later this month at eyefortransport’s upcoming 3rd Annual Green Transportation & Logistics Summit in San Francisco on September 25-27.

“Industry leaders like DuPont, IBM, 3M and Wal-Mart are the early adopters of sound environmental strategies, and now every socially responsible company should have a carbon management strategy,” said John Nadvornik, director of product marketing & strategy for Supply Chain Consulting. “The proactive enterprises that begin laying a foundation for a green supply chain now will leapfrog their competition.”

“Most organisations see the value of implementing green supply chains, but they struggle to get started and fail to make substantial progress,” continued Nadvornik. “That’s why we created the Carbon Management Model, a five-step process for implementing an enterprise-wide carbon management strategy and our corresponding CarbonView platform that provides the technology layer needed to support each phase.”

Nightspeed integration boosts Amtrak’s turnover to £100m mark

Amtrak Express Parcels has completed the integration of overnight parcel carrier, Nightspeed, which Amtrak acquired in 2005. The move has seen Amtrak’s turnover increase to £100 million, and its customer base increase to 8,500 customer accounts.

The expanded Amtrak business now incorporates 25 former Nightspeed locations with a network of 100 depots.

Amtrak has retained the Nightspeed name for specialist services not previously offered by Amtrak, including the high security overnight delivery service – Nightspeed Secure Express.

The integration has enabled Amtrak to re-structure its network to improve regional coverage, with a number of new regional depots and a new North West of England hub to handle extra capacity. The Amtrak commercial vehicle fleet has also been expanded, and now includes 2,000 delivery vans.

The Nightspeed acquisition has boosted Amtrak’s presence in a number of key B2B sectors, providing additional volumes that compliment Amtrak’s home delivery services.

According to Amtrak CEO Jonathan Smith, this is the first time two UK parcel networks have been fully integrated.

“We could have taken an easier route but we wanted to create a bigger and stronger business by building on Nightspeed’s strengths,” said Smith. “Now that the integration is complete, we can capitalise on the business potential that was so evident at acquisition. The integration has not only given us a boost in capacity and an increase in volumes, but also entry into some appealing new markets such as high security express services and government mail.”

Japanese government gives final approval to postal privatization plan

The government gave green light Monday to a blueprint submitted earlier this year by Japan Post Corp. for privatizing the nation’s postal services.

It was the government’s final endorsement of the 10-year privatization process beginning on Oct. 1, when postal services will be split into four stock firms — savings, insurance, mail and over-the-counter services — under Japan Post, which will turn into their holding company.

The blueprint, submitted to the government in late April, includes the list of assets and employees Japan Post will take over from the public postal corporation that currently runs postal operations and some new enterprises planned for privatized entities.

Among such new business plans is letting the postal savings bank, which is one of the four planned entities, act as a sales agent for regional banks for their housing-loan products.

But the bank and life insurance industries voiced concerns the same day about the postal financial institutions expanding operations, saying they could threaten them.

USPS pays customers to use its kiosks

The U.S. Postal Service wants its customers to handle their own postage — and is offering cash prizes to those who do.

At post offices nationwide, including three in Greensboro, customers will get a chance at USD 250 daily cash prizes and a grand prize of USD 10,000 when they use the Automatic Postal Center kiosks rather than standing in line to be served.

“It’s a 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week postal clerk, basically,” said Carl Walton, Greensboro spokesman for the postal service. “Most people don’t realize that 70-80 percent of the transactions they do at the window could be done at these kiosks faster.”

Walton said the service hopes the contest — open to anyone with an Automatic Postal Center receipt — will drive more people to try the kiosks and make it a habit.
