DHL delivers help to earthquake victims in Peru

Deutsche Post World Net has joined the international relief effort to help victims of the earthquake disaster in Peru. The DHL Disaster Response Team (DRT) for the Americas region is supporting the National Civil Defense Institute at the Pisco Air Force Base with its logistics know-how. The city of Pisco, 250 kilometers south of Peru’s capital Lima, is located in the region that is severely affected by the earthquake. DHL in 2005 entered into a humanitarian partnership with OCHA, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, to improve disaster response. Deutsche Post World Net Chief Executive Officer and Chairman Klaus Zumwinkel: “This is part of our corporate social responsibility program.”

The DRT Americas, based in South Florida, and DRT Asia Pacific, based in Singapore, were both set up last year. A third DRT for the region Middle East and Africa is planned for this year so that DHL will be able to offer its humanitarian support worldwide. The DRTs, whose services are provided, free of charge, each draw on a pool of about 80 DHL employees. Up to 15 DHL expert volunteers are on the scene at any one time.

In recent years, DHL and its employees have gained extensive experience in disaster relief management and are able to react quickly and in a professional manner to sudden natural disasters. The company has already used its transport and logistics skills as part of relief efforts launched after the tsunami disaster in the Indian Ocean, Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast region and the earthquake in northern Pakistan. DHL for years has been active in the countries it does business in to live up to its social responsibility standards.

Western Union eyes growing remittance market in India

Eyeing the growing remittance market in India, Western Union, a global money-transfer service provider is projecting itself as a safe and reliable medium to transfer money to India.

According to Suvodeep Das, South Asia marketing director, “India has the world’s second largest migrant population, of about 25 million, who stay in different countries across the world. Every year over 7,500,000 migrants get added to this list”.

The number is significant and is next only to China which has 30 million migrant people living across the globe.

Western Union with over 40,000 agent locations in 4,000 towns, cities and villages helps the migrant Indian population (most of whom are from Punjab, Gujarat and Kerala) in sending and receiving money.

Giving example of about one lakh Punjabi farmers engaged in farming in Italy, Das said, “Most of the Indian migrants are blue-collared workers and we help them send money to their loved ones living in India”.
Since a large portion of the remittance market in India is informal, the size of this market becomes difficult to estimate or quantify.

“We are trying to capture this informal market most of which exists in rural India”, he added.

Explaining the safety and reliability of the transactions Das said, “we have a paper trial of all transactions so we can identify both sender and receiver”.

Western Union has registered a growth of 95 pct in the last six quarters in India and agent locations has grown from 3000 in 2001 to 40,000.

State Bank of India plans a tie-up with post offices to expand rural reach

State Bank of India, the country’s biggest lender, plans to partner with the with India Post to leverage the expansive postal network for providing credit and other services in rural areas.
This was announced by finance minister, P Chidambaram, speaking in the Lok Sabha during the debate on the SBI Amendment Bill, which replaces an ordinance for transferring the Reserve Bank’s stake in SBI to the Union Government.
The alliance will bring banking facilities to even the remotest villages. SBI’s 9000-strong branch network is already the largest in the country. If the branches of its seven associate banks were added to the tally, the total branch network would reach 13,000.
However, these numbers look minuscule in comparison to India Post’s network, which has over 1.5 lakh post offices, a majority of which are in rural areas. Post offices in India already offer a host of services such as savings, insurance, mutual funds, pension and domestic as well as international money transfer.

Logibag secures a new contract with LaPoste

Logibag, the locker management and service company that is a subsidiary of ByBox Ltd, has won a new contract with La Poste to supply, install and maintain an undisclosed number of its Cityssimo V2 postal lockers at locations across France.

The contract has been signed with Coliposte, the parcel division of La Poste following successful trials with the Cityssimo Version 1 locker during 2006.

The first order forming part of the new contract has been received and the V2 units are scheduled for installation in August. The lockers will be used to facilitate consumer deliveries, i.e. those times when it is more convenient to collect a parcel from a locker in a chosen location than wait somewhere for it to be delivered – a service that is becoming increasingly popular in Europe.

Meanwhile, the consumer interface has been improved and now includes a 15-inch color touch-screen that will accept credit card payments and print self-adhesive postage labels for parcel shipping applications.

The Czech government is preparing the remaining major state-owned companies for privatization but may keep a controlling stake in some of them, the weekly Euro reported today.

The Czech post office services provider Ceska Posta will likely be divided into several units, some of which will be up for grabs in a privatization, while others will remain under state control, the weekly said, without citing sources.

Prague airport, Letiste Praha, whose value is estimated at 100 bln crowns, may be split between the Prague municipality, which will acquire a 34 pct stake, and the finance ministry, which will keep the rest.

However, the 66 pct stake should later be sold as the Czech transportation ministry may require half of the proceeds for the state fund of transportation infrastructure, Euro reports, citing unnamed sources.

Brewery Budejovicky Budvar may offer its shares in an initial public offering, after it is transformed into a joint stock company, according to the minister of agriculture Petr Gandalovic.

TNT Post becomes major postal provider for the Welsh public sector

This month, TNT Post’s South West & South Wales team has started handling mail for two NHS Trusts in the Welsh public sector in what is predicted to be the biggest postal deal in the country since full deregulation of the postal service in 2006.

The deal will see TNT Post work collaboratively with Value Wales, under the OGC Buying Solutions Framework as a supplier to public sector organizations in Wales. By working in partnership with Value Wales, TNT Post will look to handle across the Public Sector over 100,000 items a day by the end of the first year, resulting in the Welsh tax payer saving an estimated GBP 1 million.

The first bodies to work with TNT Post will be the Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust and Gwent Healthcare NHS Trusts. Together they will pass an estimated 12,000 mail items daily to TNT Post in South Wales and as a result of these savings, the Trusts will be able to channel this money into the delivery of their front-line services.

TNT Post in the South West & South Wales has to date secured a number of significant customer wins during the first six months of trading and now has more than 50 customers in the area.
