Poczta Polska loses battle with competitors

According to a report by the Office of Electronic Communications (UKE), the national mail Poczta Polska cannot cope with increasing postal service demand.

One in three letters handled by Poczta Polska does not arrive on time. The regulator checked the quality of postal services twice. The first time in November and December 2006. Then the indicator of punctuality was 68.22 percent for priority mail and 60.37 for ordinary mail.

Then, however, Poczta Polska was troubled by a nationwide strike by postmen. This is why the UKE repeated the research in the first quarter of 2007.

The situation turned out to be as bad as before. Only 63.09 percent of priority mail arrived on time. The indicator for ordinary mail was 69.73 percent.

The UKE says that now it will monitor the performance of Poczta Polska regularly, although it does not have the right to fine the postal service.

Selling retailers on opening shop at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport

Michael Baldwin wants a FedEx Kinko’s store inside Dallas/Fort Worth Airport.

Baldwin, an executive in the airport’s revenue-management department, has spent a year and a half cajoling the Dallas-based chain to put one of its printing-and-shipping stores inside an airport terminal for the first time.

Last week, he traveled 1,100 miles to pay the company another visit, at a sprawling booth in Las Vegas. Baldwin was one of six executives from D/FW Airport attending the annual convention of the International Council of Shopping Centers, the world’s largest trade show for retailers.

The airport, which is trying to fill its five terminals with restaurants and shops, sent its largest delegation to this year’s show.

D/FW has been pressing to add more retail — it gets about half of its annual USD 500 million budget from airlines. In Las Vegas, it was touting the impending openings of several new stores and restaurants, ranging from Dunkin’ Donuts to Mont Blanc, and the availability of credit-card processing at 97 Pepsi machines.

At the same time, D/FW was recently called out by respondents in a J.D. Power survey on the depth — or lack thereof — of its food, beverage and retail offerings, even though it placed first among North American airports in overall satisfaction. Other airports also rated low in the retail categories.

Palletline launches new online service

Palletline has launched a new web-based service – the first of its kind in this sector – that enables online retailers and occasional users to book and pay for transportation of their goods to and from anywhere in the UK.
According to Palletline managing director Glyn Jones, the online service is in response to the ongoing growth of online retailing.

The service enables anyone with web access to arrange collections and deliveries nationwide at a highly competitive rate, and allows smaller customers to enjoy the same level of service as large companies that ship hundred of pallets each week via the Palletline network.

Palletline’s web-based track-and-trace system featuring on-line POD images will also be available to Palletline Online customers.

Founded in 1992, Palletline was the UK’s first national network dedicated to pallet distribution.

Operating from a main hub in Birmingham with regional hubs at Greenford, west London, and Preston, Palletline has more than 65 member companies across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, each year covering some fifteen million miles and making more than 8,500 deliveries a day on behalf of the network.

US Postal Regulatory Commission recommends temporary rate relief

The Postal Regulatory Commission May 25 offered interim rate relief for Standard Regular flats and catalog mailers in response to the U.S. Postal Service Governors’ request to reconsider the recommended rates in March.

The PRC’s decision grants a temporary rate reduction of 3 cents for all Standard Mail regular flats and 2 cents for Standard Regular nonprofit flats. The temporary transitional rate relief for Standard Regular flats mailers would end Sept. 29.

The agency said the Governors’ acceptance of this recommendation would require minimal administrative or transaction costs since the savings can be measured at the end of the transition period or at the time of mailing.

Also, additional computer hardware or software will not be needed to accommodate this temporary change. The PRC recommends mailers simply multiply the number of flats mailed by either 3 cents or 2 cents, depending on mail type.

Meanwhile, the Direct Marketing Association disagreed with the recommendation and issued a statement of disappointment in the PRC.

Czech state-run postal service Ceska posta's pre-tax profit falls 67% y/y to CZK 331 mln in 2006

Czech state-run postal services provider Ceska posta (CP), slated for privatization, reported a 2006 pre-tax profit of CZK 331 mln, down more than 67% year-on-year (y/y), mainly on expenses linked to its transformation into a joint-stock company, the company announced in a statement Tuesday.

“Extraordinary operations amounting to CZK 666.9 mln reduced CP’s pre-tax profit, but at the same time they helped us correct inaccuracies in past accounting and will enable more precise accounting in the future,” Deputy Finance Director Ladislav Musil said in a press release.

The company’s operating revenues rose 2% y/y.

CP’s transformation from a state public enterprise to a joint-stock company is a first step toward privatization. The process began last year and is scheduled to be completed in 2008.

If the several one-offs linked to this transformation are not counted in, the postal services provider would have generated a profit exceeding CZK 1 bln, CP stated.

CP will probably be privatized through the entry of a strategic partner, CP has previously said.

In 2006, CP delivered 900 mln letters and 26 mln parcels.

It employs 38,000 people and operates 3,400 branches nationwide.
