DHL Express to expand retail network in Malaysia

DHL Express (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd is looking to expand its retail network in Penang, Johor Baharu and Kuala Lumpur this year to meet rising demand.

The company currently has three retail outlets in the Klang Valley, country manager for Malaysia and Brunei, Sam Leong, told reporters after the launch of the new DHL service centre in Glenmarie here today.

The RM21 million centre was officially opened by International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz.”We are looking into the possibility of further expanding our retail network based on market demand,” Leong said.

The company was currently carrying out research to identify the best locations for the new retail outlets based on customers’ requirements, he said.

The new service centre is a 60,000-square foot facility which houses 7,000 square feet of office space and features a fully automated material handling system, ball decks to handle containers, spot cooling in the warehouse, two-tier conveyer with sort systems and capacity for 90 employees to service 40 routes throughout the area.

Leong said the centre would also link directly with DHL’s gateway operations at Subang Airport.

The link would allow DHL to minimise transit times between the gateway and service centre to improve delivery times for its Klang Valley customers by half a day, he said.

SAT Airlines starts Seoul flight under contract with DHL

SAT Airlines has started to carry out cargo charter flights from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to Seoul under a contract with DHL Express, SAT Airlines Commercial Director Sergei Burdinsky told Interfax.

“A contract to charter our An-24 liner was signed with DHL Express in February 2007 for one year. In the future, if neither of the sides object, the contract will be extended. The plane will fly to Incheon airport three times a week: on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday to South Korea and on Monday, Wednesday and Friday – back to Sakhalin,” he said.

A trial flight took place on March 7 and this week the plan started flying on schedule.

Burdinsky said that a SAT Airlines An-12 has been carrying out charter flights to Seoul for three years already, under a contract with Panalpina as part of the Sakhalin-2 project.

A source in the DHL Express office in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk told Interfax that the flight to Seoul on the An-24 is the first DHL Express charter flight in the Russian Far East. “We chartered the SAT Airlines liner together with Sakhalin Energy, but freight will be transported to Seoul not only for the Sakhalin-2 project, but for other offshore projects also, and for any other clients,” the source said.

China's Postal Savings Bank Opens For Business In Beijing

Postal Savings Bank of China opened for business Tuesday in Beijing, allowing the country’s fifth-largest bank by deposits to expand its lending after years of being the deposit-taking arm of the state postal service. The bank, which has a network of 36,000 outlets attached to the postal network, is fully owned by China Post Group. The State Council, China’s highest administrative body, created China Post Group in August by separating the business and regulatory functions of the country’s postal system. In a statement published in government-backed newspapers and on its Web site, Postal Savings Bank said: “We will rely on and make full use of the postal savings network to improve our ability to provide financial services to cities and the countryside.” The China Banking Regulatory Commission has said the bank should focus on lending to rural clients. The CBRC allowed the bank to begin trial lending projects last year.

Deutsche Post says 4Q net profit declined

Deutsche Post AG’s fourth-quarter net profit fell by around a quarter, the German mail and logistics company said Tuesday, hurt by a cut in its stake in the country’s biggest retail bank, Deutsche Postbank AG,

Bonn-based Deutsche Post, the parent of express shipper DHL, said it earned EUR643 million (USD856 million) in the October-December period a 26.6 percent drop from EUR876 million a year earlier.

That performance was well below the EUR 773 million (USD1.03 billion) forecast of analysts surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires. Fourth-quarter sales, however, increased by 35.4 percent, rising to EUR16.4 billion (USD21.8 billion) from EUR12.1 billion.

Quarterly earnings below interest and taxes fell by 5.4 percent to EUR1.28 billion (USD1.7 billion) from EUR1.36 billion a better showing than the EUR1.26 billion (USD1.68 billion) analysts expected.

Last year, Deutsche Post reduced its holding in Postbank to just over 50 percent, cutting the amount of income it receives from the business. It already has said that full-year net profit fell by 14 percent, dropping to EUR1.92 billion (USD2.55 billion) from EUR2.24 billion.

Deutsche Post said it expects full-year EBIT in 2007 to reach EUR3.6 billion (USD4.8 billion), compared with last year’s EUR3.9 billion a figure that included EUR400 million in one-time gains. It forecast a “slight increase” in sales.

The company said that the integration of British-based logistics group Exel PLC and other acquisitions had gone well.

Deutsche Post sees FY 2007 EBIT 'at least' 3.6 bln eur vs 3.9 bln in 2006

Deutsche Post AG said it expects full-year EBIT of ‘at least’ 3.6 bln eur, down from the 3.9 bln eur reported in 2006, as it does not expect to repeat one-time gains comparable to last year’s sale of 276 mln eur shares in Deutsche Postbank AG.

The German mail carrier said the target represents an increase of 3 pct from last year’s result excluding one-off gains, adding it sees a ‘positive business development’ ahead.

Deutsche Post also said it expects its Express division to achieve full-year EBIT of at least 400 mln eur.

The unit is set to complete its restructuring programme by 2009, with analysts saying it may be finalised ahead of schedule.

Its Mail division’s EBIT is expected to remain flat at 2 bln eur, as the company expects international business units to offset losses in its domestic German market caused by increased competition.

The company also said it wants to raise EBIT at its Logistics unit by 15 pct from last year’s 762 mln eur and sees ‘high single-digit percentage growth’ in revenue.

Deutsche Post’s Financial Services division will also grow, with the group anticipating a rise in revenue, driven by ‘the steady increase in contributions from BHW’.

The division will achieve EBIT of about 100 mln eur, an increase of at least 5 pct.
