Royal Mail improves but misses half its service targets

Royal Mail is today expected to publish quarterly figures showing that it is still failing to achieve the minimum performance standard for over half its service targets including first class mail. Although performance for first class mail improved slightly in the first quarter, Postwatch is concerned that having failed 80% of its performance targets last year, Royal Mail is still
falling below the minimum acceptable standard for nine of it’s fifteen services so early in the year. Meanwhile, the regulator Postcomm, which sets the targets, is currently considering what action it will take as a result of last year’s poor performance.

Pitney Bowes to acquire DDD

Pitney Bowes Inc., a postage-meter maker and document-management company, has agreed to pay USD53.6 million in cash, stock and assumed debt for DDD Co., a privately held Landover mail-processing firm, to provide more services to government clients.

DDD has 1,200 employees who do work for the U.S. Postal Service around the country. Six hundred of its employees work in the Washington area. The company specializes in screening mail for government agencies with security concerns.

UK Royal Mail still underperforming

New figures showing over 90% of first class letters are being delivered on time have been welcomed – but troubled Royal Mail was facing warnings today that it was still underperforming.

With strike action looming, the postal service released statistics yesterday showing 93.2% of first class letters were delivered on time in June, the highest figure since the summer of 1998.

China Post cuts express mail charges

China’s State Postal Bureau (China Post) announced it will cut domestic express mail charges by 10% in a move to boost its presence in the lucrative yet highly competitive sector.

“We hope the price cut could enhance our market competitiveness and promote growth (of the express mail delivery business),” Hui Hongwei, a spokesman for China Post, said at a news briefing.

TNT Express to add Naples and Florence to European air network from 9th Sept

TPG NV unit TNT Express will launch new connections between its European hub in Liege, Belgium, and Naples and Florence in Italy on Sept 9, said Christian Drenthen, managing director of TNT Express Worldwide Networks.

Speaking at a news conference, he said the new routes will bring the number of Italian airports in TNT Express’s network to eight, five more than rival DHL, a unit of Deutsche Post World Net AG, and four more than United Parcel Service Inc.

TAT Express to cut 500 jobs

The French union organisation FO has confirmed that TAT Express, an airmail subsidiary of French national postal services group La Poste, will present plans to cut 500 jobs on September 1 during an extraordinary meeting of the works council. These jobs represent one third of the total workforce. The union says several hundred straight redundancies could take place, and has expressed concern that the plan will jeopardise the company’s survival.

TNT UK: new charge has little impact

The introduction by TNT Express of a new minimum invoice charge of GBP25 will not affect the vast majority of the company‘s customers, says divisional managing director, Chris Atkinson. TNT Express says it is introducing the charge in the wake of significant increases in operating costs over the past 12 months, particularly in relation to insurance premiums, London congestion charges and the Working Time Directive. Only a small minority of its customer base is likely to be affected by the move since most customers already meet the GBP25 per invoice threshold.

United Pallet Network ‘in talks‘ with ANC

Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire-based United Pallet Network says it met with ANC to discuss the parcel carrier‘s wish to develop into the pallet sectork either through a strategic alliance or by delveoping its own network. UPN managing director Andrew Spencer told Motor Transport: ‘Representatives from ANC did come and pick our brains but nothing has been continued.‘ ANC says: ‘We are continally reviewing our service offerings and the market situation to ensure ANC provides the very best available service, exceeding our customers‘ expectations.‘
