Deutsche Post chief sees company fully privatised in next four years

Deutsche Post chairman Klaus Zumwinkel said in a magazine interview released Wednesday that he expects the semi-public German postal authority to be fully privatised within the next four years.

“I could well imagine the state cutting its stake to zero by 2007,” the expected date for the full liberalisation of letter-delivery services throughout the whole of Europe, Zumwinkel told the latest edition of the fortnightly magazine Capital.

Inspector general quits US Postal Service

The U.S. Postal Service’s inspector general has resigned after members of Congress and a government report questioned her personnel practices and her spending for team-building staff retreats.

Postal Inspector General Karla Corcoran, whose office is supposed to guard against fraud, waste and abuse, “has expressed her intention to retire immediately,” the governors of the Postal Service announced.

Corcoran conducted retreats where her employees had to dress up in costumes, participate in mock trials and tape testimonials for the inspector general.

Corcoran was unavailable for comment, her office said.

Williams appointed second USPS Inspector General

The Governors of the United States Postal Service have selected David C. Williams to be the second Inspector General of the United States Postal Service. The incumbent InspectorGeneral, Karla W. Corcoran, has expressed her intention to retire immediately and will do so with the thanks of the Governors for her service. Mr. Williams will assume his new duties immediately.

Blaster worm variant enters Japan Post computers

Japan Post has said a variant of the Blaster computer worm has intruded into some of the 6,000 computers on the postal services organization’s nationwide network for in-house communications.

The variant, the MS Blast D, has inflicted damage on computers at Japan Post’s Tokyo headquarters and nine branches from Hokkaido to Shikoku island, the state-run corporation said.

Vietnam Post and UPS set up joint venture

Vietnam’s largest telecom business, the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT), and the United Parcel Service Inc (UPS) of the United States have signed a contract to form a joint venture.

Under the contract, the two sides will jointly deliver information, goods and funds to over 200 countries and territories worldwide covered by the UPS global service network. For the time being, Vietnam will be included in the UPS global air delivery network.

Postal groups not keen to cover in strike

Private sector postal companies are lukewarm about providing cover if there is a national postal strike, undermining a central plank of the Royal Mail’s bargaining strategy with unions.
The Royal Mail has warned the union it “will not emerge from even the threat of a ballot unscathed . . . If postmen and women walk out, customers will walk away and competitors walk in.” But the private companies claim to be lukewarm about the prospect of delivering post in the event of a strike. Four companies – Hays, TPG of the Netherlands, UK Mail and Express Dairies – hold licences to operate in the UK postal market, mostly handling business post.

TNT Logistics wins warehousing contract for Rabofacet

TNT Logistics Benelux and Rabofacet BV, part of the Rabobank Group, have signed a five-year contract under which Rabofacet will outsource to TNT Logistics its warehousing operations in Best, the Netherlands.

Starting 1st September 2003, TNT Logistics Benelux will be responsible for inbound, storage and outbound activities at its existing multi-user site in Eindhoven. The activities include supplying printed matter and consumables to parts of the Rabobank Group. Rabofacet currently carries out these activities under its own management. The contract provides for TNT Logistics Benelux to put the dedicated Rabofacet employees on its payroll.

West Midlands based JTA Pallet Distribution Ltd has recently joined Pall-Ex, the UK’s largest overnight palletised distribution network, and will operate in the DY and WV postcodes. Formed over 20 years ago and with in excess of 20 vehicles, JTA regularly travels to all the business and industrial centres of the UK, Europe and the Eastern Bloc.
