Judge in U.S UPS/ASTAR legal fight steps down

The judge overseeing a year-long legal battle between a once German-owned US cargo airline and the delivery giants FedEx and United Parcel Service has removed himself from the case after being accused of xenophobia.

Miami-based Astar Air Cargo, previously called DHL Airways, had charged in a motion that Administrative Law Judge Ronnie Yoder should step down because he had wildly exceeded his mandate and openly favoured FedEx and UPS in discovery and other matters.

In the document, Astar sought to disqualify the judge, accusing him of “deep-seated personal bias” and “xenophobia”.

FedEx Express adds Iraq service to global network

Federal Express Corp. has added Iraq to its global network, offering door-to-door pick up and delivery for shipments in and out of the cities of Baghdad, Basra and Mosul. “Iraq has the potential to be one of the fastest growing economies and will require integrated end-to-end transportation solutions,” said Hamdi Osman, regional vice president, FedEx Middle East, Indian Sub-Continent and Africa.

National postal service operator Ceska posta sees letter delivery fall nearly 10 % in 1H

The national postal service Ceska posta (CP) delivered 292 mln letters and postcards in the first six months of 2003, a drop of 9 % yr/yr. The firm managed to hike revenues however, by 8.6 % yr/yr to CZK 2.12 bn. CP attributes the decrease in number of letters delivered to greater interest in e-mail and SMS, CP spokesman Ladislav Vancura told the CTK news agency.

Union presses for more upfront pay from UK Royal Mail to avert post strike

Britain’s main postal workers’ union, the CWU, pressed Royal Mail to pay more of its 14.5% pay and productivity offer upfront in order to avert the first national strike for seven years.

Talks at the conciliation service Acas, adjourned last night and are to resume tomorrow, with the CWU hoping that Royal Mail will agree to reduce the 10% of its pay offer linked to productivity changes such as ending the daily second delivery.

Toshiba to provide mail-sorting system to Sweden Post

Toshiba Corp. said Monday it has won a contract worth USD12 million to provide the Swedish postal services with advanced mail-sorting equipment. In June 2004, the Japanese electronics maker will start delivering eight units of its Series TT-1000 systems, each equipped with an optical character reader and video coding system, Toshiba said in a press release. The mail-sorting systems scan mail and recognize handwritten or printed addresses, print appropriate barcodes onto envelopes and use the information in the bar codes to sort mail into stackers on the basis of destination.
