Fedex, UPS want new review of DHL U.S case

FedEx and United Parcel Service want the Department of Transportation’s inspector general to review the controversial inquiry into the ownership of the former DHL Airways. The inspector general, Kenneth Mead, issued a report earlier this year that was highly critical of DOT’s prior handling of complaints by FedEx and UPS that Deutsche Post World Net and DHL International illegally controlled DHL Airways, now Astar Air Cargo, which operates 40 aircraft on U.S. domestic routes.

Curtin has to pull AN Post together and make profits

The cost of delivering mail throughout the country five days a week – with 70pc of costs represented by wages and salaries – is a key issue for a postal service facing more financial losses. AN Post’s incoming chief executive, Donal Curtin, had to hit the groundrunning after taking up his position three weeks ago. Communications Regulator Etain Doyle has been considering the State company’s application for an increase in the price of a stamp for domestic mail from 41 to 48. The EUR18m in additional revenue which the stamp price increase will generate in a fullyear is unlikely, however, to pull the mail group back into the black in the current year.

UK Royal Mail calls for talks with ACAS

Royal Mail have made an attempt to break the deadlocked pay talks with the postal workers’ union by calling for talks with Acas, the conciliation service. The Communication Workers’ Union has threatened the first national strike action in seven years over the company’s pay offer.

The company have offered 14.5% over 18 months, bringing delivery workers’ minimum pensionable pay up from £262 to £300 a week. The union argues the “real” offer is only 4.5%, since the rest is in return for various changes in working practices. The CWU’s postal executive is to decide whether to accept the invitation to go to Acas. Last year’s postal pay talks involved negotiations with Acas.
