Deutsche Post sales and earnings damaged by sluggish economy

Mail and package delivery company Deutsche Post announced a sharp rise in second quarter earnings over 2002 when the company was hit with a massive fine from the European Union.

The company announced a net profit of 150 million (US$172 million) between April and June, compared to net loss last year of 257 million for that period. But in 2002, the company was hit with a 906 million fine from the European Union for misusing German government subsidies that skewed comparison.

Deutsche Post said its earnings were actually lower than expected, damaged by the sluggish global economy. It reported that second quarter sales for this year fell to 9.422 billion (US$10.8 billion) from 9.648 billion last year.

Cutbacks pledge urged over Irish Postal Service

The Irish Labour parliamentary opposition party tonight called for government assurances that a record loss for the state-backed An Post postal company would not “be used as an excuse for cutting rural postal services or for threatening the public’s right to send and receive mail through the post”.

Frontbench spokesman Tommy Broughan said: “Today’s announcement comes against the background of a deteriorating postal service and with further cutbacks threatened.

The top 10 airfreight exporters in France

The national association of airfreight agents in France (Snagfa) has published a list of the industry leaders based on the export turnover figures from 2002. Compared to the previous year, there were few changes in the rankings. As TFA, Transcap, Scac and GEI SDV all now operate under the SDV umbrella, the latter was therefore able to dislodge Panalpina from first place, pushing it down to second. Danzas-AEI (now trading as DHL) followed in third place. Schenker ousted Saga Air from fourth place, which fell back to No.5. Places six to ten were taken by:
Kuehne & Nagel, Geodis Overseas, Gefco, Aerofret and Menlo-Emery Air Freight in that order.
The French airfreight industry is undergoing a phase of consolidation. In 2001, the five major airfreight agencies generated only 35% of total turnover in this sector, by 2002, this figure was already up to nearly 44% and the upwards trend is continuing.
The market leader SDV dispatched approximately 200,000 t of airfreight in 2002. Around 38% of its EUR 1.8 billion revenue stemmed from airfreight business. In the pan-European rankings, SDV occupies fifth place.

A presidential commission is examining broad-based reforms to the 736,000-person U.S. Postal Service. Among the proposals: letting the USPS slash prices in the summer, when mail volume drops, and offering discounts to merchants who pick up parcels at the post office rather than wait for delivery.

Proponents of the reform hope it will stabilize the troubled USPS, which lost $676 million in 2002 and amassed $11 billion in debt to the U.S. Treasury.
