New chief for Royal Mail Group Scotland

The Royal Mail Group has appointed a new boss to head its Scottish affairs.

Ian McKay will represent the Royal Mail, Post Office and Parcelforce Worldwide in Scotland and will have particular responsibility for links with the Scottish parliament and its politicians.

Mr McKay takes up his director of Scottish affairs post on August 11 and he will also chair the Royal Mail Group Advisory Board for Scotland.

Ex-Minister warns on Post Office card accounts

Many pensioners and other benefit recipients are finding the system for opting for Post Office card cash accounts “extremely difficult, very bureaucratic and time-consuming”, a Labour ex-health minister said today.

Lord Hunt of Kings Heath, who quit in protest at the Iraq war, urged the Government to ensure a “level playing field” so claimants could, if they wished, continue to draw cash over the counter.

Japan Post aims to turn around loss-making mail business

Japan Post, a public corporation created in April, intends to redouble efforts to turn around the loss-making mail service it inherited from the government.

The mail service division of the country’s postal service incurred a loss of 22.5 billion yen in fiscal 2002 ended in March, after posting an 8-billion-yen profit the previous year, as it failed to cover a drop in mail delivery revenues with cost cuts.

Under an action plan adopted in May, Japan Post is reducing its payroll while launching a new cut-rate parcel service in a bid to meet its profit target of 1.4 billion yen for fiscal 2003 and 12.6 billion yen for fiscal 2004.

Iron Mountain purchase of Hays reaching £200m mark

Iron Mountain, the American document storage company, is expected to be victorious in the bid battle for the document management business of Hays, the British business service group.

Insiders have told The Independent on Sunday that its winning bid for Hays’ IMS division could be “approaching pounds 200m”, and substantially more than the highest analyst forecast of pounds 160m.

Iron Mountain, whose European division is half-owned by UK firm Mentmore, is sealing its reputation for aggressive expansion, demonstrated by its sales growth to $1.3bn (pounds 797m) last year from $209m in 1997.

ePLDT, DataPost, Spring Sign JV in Philippines

ePLDT, the information and communications technology company of telecommunications giant PLDT, recently signed a joint venture agreement with DataPost Pte., Ltd., and Spring to provide printing and enveloping services in the Philippines. The new Manila-based company will be called ePDS, Inc. It will provide laser printing and enveloping services for statements, bills and invoices, and other value-added services to companies in the Philippines.

German Post boss says UK is 'a mess'

The head of Germany’s postal giant, Deutsche Post, has attacked Royal Mail and Postcomm, the industry regulator, for stalling on the opening up of the UK network.

Klaus Zumwinkel, chairman and chief executive of the German logistics giant, said: “We want to bring another choice to customers here … We have a licence to do that but the pricing regime and all the stuff between Royal Mail and the regulator – it’s a mess.”

CEOs ordered to testify in DHL dispute

A federal judge ordered top executives of Deutsche Post and DHL Worldwide Express to testify in a dispute over cargo carrier DHL Airways Inc.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the ruling by Ronnie Yoder, the Department of Transportation’s chief administrative law judge, is a win for FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Services Inc.
