Small business group decries postal increases in Ireland

A business group has called on the Minister for Communications, Mr Ahern, to instruct An Post to drop its application for a price increase.

The postal company has applied to the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) for an increase in stamp prices from 41c to 48c for letters. Higher increases are proposed for certain large envelopes and packets.

UK Post Office Card could be costly for pensioners

Millions of pensioners could have their welfare benefits withdrawn because of a hidden means test in the Government’s flagship proposal for the new Post Office Card Account. The Tories warned last night that a loophole in the system for ending the traditional weekly cash payment could leave the elderly financially vulnerable. The Government is switching to electronic payments over the next two years and has set up the account as an option for the estimated 3.5 million benefit recipients who do not have access to banking services.

UK Royal Mail shake up costs GBP564m at halfway point

Allan Leighton’s restructuring of Royal Mail has seen the postal group spend Pounds 564 million in redundancy and early retirement payments to date – just halfway through the process.

The payouts have been made as part of a generous redundancy programme, in which managers in the loss-making organisation are being offered sums of between six months’ and a year’s salary, in addition to a lump sum for taking voluntary redundancy or early retirement.

Royal Mail has said that it needs to cut 30,000 jobs from its 220,000 payroll in three years or face bankruptcy.

DHL Danzas Air & Ocean acquires all of Cormar

DHL Danzas Air & Ocean on Wednesday said it had acquired the remaining shares of Corporacion Cormar Sociedad Anonima, a Central American transport and logistics specialist, in order to build operations across the region and achieve synergies for the DHL Group. DHL Danzas Air & Ocean will acquire the remaining 65 percent of Cormar shares from the longstanding senior management and outside shareholders that are also customers of Cormar.

DHL Danzas lays off 50 salespeople

DHL Danzas Air & Ocean laid off approximately 50 salespeople, including support personnel, in what a spokeswoman described as “part of our ongoing effort to align our costs with the level of business.” The move reflects “the continuing weakness in the global economy and a trend by our largest customers to become more import-driven,” said Candace Bouchard, the spokeswoman.

DHL Danzas had approximately 280 salespeople in the U.S. before the cutbacks. The move is not related to any consolidation of DHL Danzas and DHL Express, she added.

Unions back An Post axe

Unions at An Post have agreed to a radical rationalisation of the company’s parcel delivery business that will lead to the loss of 123 jobs. SDS, which has about 40% of the Irish parcel delivery market and currently employs 427 people, has seen its revenues fall significantly over the past two years. Competition has intensified from companies such as UPS and DHL with international operations who are able to offer customers better tracking of parcels. Before last year, SDS’s financial problems were largely masked by overall growth in the market
