Canada's Postal workers vote in favour of strike

Canada’s postal workers voted yesterday in favour of a strike, to be called when the union judges that the time is right. Ninety-two percent of the workers endorsed a strike, with 2,500 more members voting than during a similar vote in 1997.

Deutsche Post sole control of Securicor Distribution Ops cleared by EU

The European Commission said it has cleared the acquisition by Deutsche Post AG of sole control of Securicor Omega Holdings Ltd, which it previously jointly owned with Securicor PLC.

The commission said the deal gives rise to only limited overlaps which do not trigger competition concerns in either the UK or Ireland, which are the only member states where both companies are active in these services.

Indian Courier Co's plan to hike rates by 30%

Courier companies, lead by big names including Blue Dart, First Flight and Overnite Express, are planning 25-30% hike in courier and parcel rates in next fortnight following 67% hike in on-board courier rates by domestic airlines.

The rate hike has been effected only for the courier industry and not on postal services, including EMS SpeedPost. Expenses incurred on board courier accounts for around 30% of operational cost of express courier companies. The Express Industry Council of India (EICI) has written to the civil aviation ministry but is yet to get a response. If they do not get any response within the next 10-15 days, they may pass on the hike to their customers.

Commission clears Deutsche Post's sole control of Securicor distribution activities

The European Commission has granted clearance under the Merger Regulation to the acquisition by Deutsche Post AG (DPAG) of sole control of Securicor Omega Holdings Ltd, a mail, parcel, freight delivery and logistics company currently controlled by DPAG and Securicor Plc. The deal gives rise to only limited overlaps which do not trigger dominance concerns in either the UK or Ireland, which are the only two EU countries where both are active in these postal distribution activities.
