UK Post Office® branches to become more commercial and offer more financial products and services in sweeping changes, Allan Leighton reveals today

Post Office branches will sell a comprehensive range of financial services as part of a sweeping commercialisation of the UK’s network of branches, Allan Leighton, chairman of Royal Mail revealed today (Tuesday) at the National Federation of Subpostmasters conference in Scarborough. The first, an unsecured personal loan, will go on sale from October with a national roll out targeted for January/February 2004. Mr Leighton said: “Post Office reinvention is now truly underway, and David Mills, the Chief Executive, and I want it to be based on the entrepreneurial skills of our subpostmasters backed by new products, new incentives and new advertising. We are determined to put our Post Office branches on a better financial footing, by giving customers the products they want and letting subpostmasters get on with the job of running their branches to suit their customers.

DHL Danzas lays off 50 salespeople

DHL Danzas Air & Ocean laid off approximately 50 salespeople, including support personnel, in what a spokeswoman described as “part of our ongoing effort to align our costs with the level of business.” The move reflects “the continuing weakness in the global economy and a trend by our largest customers to become more import-driven,” said Candace Bouchard, the spokeswoman. DHL Danzas had approximately 280 salespeople in the U.S. before the cutbacks. The move is not related to any consolidation of DHL Danzas and DHL Express, she added.

USPS to eliminate police in six cities

In a letter dated June 12, 2003, U.S. Postal Service Labor Relations Manager Doug A. Tulino notified the U.S. Postal Police Officer’s union of plans to close police operations in the following six cities: Birmingham, AL; Buffalo, NY; Denver, CO; Hartford, CT; Jacksonville, FL; Seattle, WA. Despite increased terrorist threats targeted at government property and employees; and despite the Anthrax attacks of 2001, Tulino said the reason for the closures is that a review has shown the presence of armed postal police is no longer warranted at these facilities.

UK Post Offices to offer loans and credit cards

Post offices are to start offering personal loans and credit cards as part of the “sweeping commercialisation” of the network, it was revealed today.

Unsecured loans will be offered across the country from October, in direct competition with banks and supermarkets.

Irish An Post strikes hit dole payments

The GPO was shut down yesterday after unofficial action by An Post staff.

The industrial action by counter staff left thousands of unemployed people without their dole payments. More than 20 post offices nationwide, including the GPO, were forced to close.

An Post said yesterday that those involved in the action would have their pay docked. But the Communications Workers’ Union (CWU) warned of further action if that happened.

CSMP expresses concern about relationship with La Poste

CSMP, the French press distribution regulator, has said that newspaper publishers are concerned about their relationship with French post office La Poste. The publishers want the government not to reduce the subsides provided to La Poste for 2004. The rate for the distribution of newspapers is to increase by 3.7 per cent from July 1.
