Iceland becomes latest addition to PNLs Nordic postal alliance

Owned by the Norwegian and Danish Post Offices, Pan Nordic Logistics (PNL), is now completing its Nordic postal alliance by signing an agreement with Iceland Post. The result will be a comprehensive network reaching all households and companies in Iceland, the rest of the Nordic region, and the Baltic region. This partnership with Iceland Post means that the company is integrating its network. In the long run, Iceland Post and PNL will jointly develop services for the Nordic market.

TNT targets Hong Kong – Europe cargo flights

TNT, the express courier and mail company, is in talks with AirMark, an Indonesian airline owned by mainly Malaysian interests, about launching cargo flights between Hong Kong and Europe. Hong Kong deputy country manager Ambrose Linn said the move followed the disruption to express shipments caused by airlines cutting back scheduled services in the wake of the atypical pneumonia outbreak.

Europa launches mailer service to Europa

Europa Worldwide Express has launched a mailer servicee aimed at making mailing houses, post offices, parcel cariers, offices of exchange and private companies. The service offers daily overnight departures to Ireland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, with a daily 48 hour service to Scandinavia, Spain, Italy, Switzerland and Austria.

Canada Post Office, CUPW return to bargaining

There’s no imminent postal strike, says an optimistic spokesman for Canada Post.

“Things look pretty good actually. We’re back at the table Monday for some intense negotiations,” said John Caines.

Results of a strike vote by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers were expected Sunday. The union could not be reached for comment.

EWS may sue over Royal Mail contract

Royal Mail’s decision to stop using rail from next March could land the company in court. UK rail freight operator EWS provides train services to Royal Mail under a 10-year contract that runs to September 2006. EWS planning director Graham Smith told IFW that although the company did not want to go down the legal route, Royal Mail had “a genuine commitment to honour this agreement”. EWS operates 49 trains a day for Royal Mail across the UK rail network, hauling 20m items, including 25% of all firstclass mail. The traffic represents 10% of EWS’s business.

UK Express Dairies ready to deliver

The milkmen of Express Dairies, the milk and cream producer, will soon be delivering contact lenses, CDs and books during the morning round.

Express will discuss the service in its full-year results, to be posted tomorrow. The company is expected to reveal profits of pounds 11.7m, after restructuring costs, and sales of pounds 675m. This is compared to a lost last year of pounds 10.1m. However, its sales have fallen following the disposal of subsidiaries such as its UHT milk-making business.

The company won a postal licence last year, so it is able to compete with Royal Mail for the delivery of letters and parcels. It is already delivering around 20,000 items per week, although analysts are not expecting this to have had a significant effect on the results.

UPS Jetair to offer trade finance

UPS Jetair Pvt Ltd — a 60:40 joint venture between United Parcel Service (UPS) and Jetair — is set to introduce an electronic payment facility that promises to simplify financial transactions in international trade.

The trade finance facility called Exchange Collect was developed by UPS — the largest package distribution company in the world. It reduces the risks of dealing with new or unknown customers, and ensures that an exporter receives payment within 10 days of delivery.
