Irish Post Office and ANC venture delivers volume and savings to both

A year ago, The Irish Post Office’s distribution arm, SDS, and UK-based ANC formed a partnership to provide deliveries within each other’s domestic markets. The deal, according to ANC, was struck in order to drive growth for sales in each market through quality services.

Never before had there been a similar distribution contract signed between a publicly-owned postal operator and a private company. SOS offered ANC the network of a national postal operation, while ANC claimed it could provide better attention to SOS, needs than previous partner, Parcelforce Worldwide.

Fedex offers staff voluntary lay-offs

FedEx has responded to the declining US air express delivery market by offering its first voluntary redundancy and early retirement programme, which will result in net costs of Dollars 130m-Dollars 160m in fiscal 2004. The programme is expected to affect 14,000 salaried US FedEx employees. FedEx employs about 116,000 US workers. The scheme will not affect FedEx drivers and customer service agents, who are paid hourly. FedEx, the world’s largest air express deliverer, would not say how many workers were expected to take the severance packages, but expressed confidence that employees would be attracted by the terms, which included a Dollars 10,000 lump sum and full pension benefits for those over 50.

TNT pledges expanding business in China market

TNT International Express, one of the world’s leading business-to-business express carriers, vowed Monday to enhance its performance in the lucrative Chinese market, after ending its 15-year joint venture with Sinotrans.

Beijing-based Machplus Worldwide Express has been appointed as the main distributor of TNT Express’ products and services in China following the end of the joint venture last week.

Estonia's postal company "threatens" to open courier service in Latvia

If the Latvian postal company Latvijas Pasts fails to quickly develop its courier postal service network, the Estonian postal company has “threatened” to open its own courier service branches in Latvia, reported Latvijas Pasts.
Temporary CEO at Latvijas Pasts, Gints Skodovs, said that courier services are an opportunity for state postal companies to gain significant additional revenues, but seeing as Latvijas Pasts has not yet developed this sector enough, the situation is slowing development for the postal companies of neighboring Estonia and Lithuania. Skodovs said that it is crucial for postal companies to offer uniform services across the region, but Latvia is currently a blank space in this sense.

FedEx offering return service

FedEx Corp. is expected on Monday to introduce FedEx Consolidated Return Service, a new service for direct marketers. Under the service, which is designed for retailers with more than 150 returns daily, customers can drop off an item to be returned at any FedEx World Service Center or FedEx Authorized Ship Center using a pre-authorized number provided by the merchant. Cost varies by weight and distance.

FedEx said consumers will benefit, because they can drop off items at any FedEx service center and receive credit promptly.

Deutsche Bahn threatened with loss of postal business

Deutsche Bahn, the German national rail operator, is reported to be facing the prospect of loss of business with postal service and logistics group Deutsche Post. The postal group has criticised the rail service for poor transport quality and slowness, and is therefore increasing concentration on air mail services.
