French postal regulator approves La Poste contract

The contract with the state which accompanies the 2003-2007 business plan of the French post office (La Poste) was approved yesterday evening by the French postal and telecoms services authority (CSSPPT). In its report, the regulator stresses that La Poste should not close any of its post offices until a substitute service has been set up. It also warns that what it calls the recurrent problem of the French post office’s pension scheme must be solved by 2005.

Deutsche Post's monopoly is not infringement of German constitution

The Federal Constitutional Court of Germany has ruled that the monopoly held by Deutsche Post, the German postal service, is not an infringement of the German constitution. Six other companies which had hoped to break into the market for postal services had complained about the exclusive licence held by Deutsche Post for the delivery of letters and catalogues, claiming that the sole purpose of the licence was to protect Deutsche Post against competition and to increase the value of shares in the company.

Business Post expects to launch its UK Mail by April

Business Post expects to launch its UK Mail business by next April, to challenge Royal Mail’s dominance of business mail services.

The UK Mail service will collect post from business customers and undertake the initial sorting before feeding into Royal Mail’s system for local sorting and final delivery. Previous negotiations with Royal Mail failed to reach an agreement but Postcomm, the industry regulator, is expected to finalise a tariff for the service by Christmas.

Neiman Marcus Group names FedEx companies exclusive carriers

FedEx has announced that The Neiman Marcus Group Inc., a premier upscale American retailer for generations, has selected three FedEx operating companies as exclusive providers of shipping services for all Neiman Marcus divisions.

The three-year agreement will be “multi-modal,” relying on services provided by FedEx Express for domestic and international express deliveries and by FedEx Ground. Neiman Marcus will also utilize FedEx Freight for other freight services.

DHL to handle Hitachi's global shipments

Hitachi Ltd. will contract integrated logistics company DHL Japan Inc. to ship audiovisual equipment direct from the factory to customers.

The move is in support of a new Hitachi shipping system designed to reduce inventory.

The system will be implemented in April 2004 solely for shipments of liquid-crystal display projectors to Europe. Hitachi will broaden the system to include all audiovisual products in every global market by March 2006.

Deutsche Telekom snubs logistics partner Deutsche Post

Deutsche Telekom, one of the most important logistics customers for Deutsche Post, is snubbing its one-time sister company and is allowing the majority of its mobile telephones to be sent by Deutsche Post competitor GLS. “We are carrying out an estimated 75 per cent of the entire dispatch volume for T-Mobile”, GLS chief Rico Bank said to ‘Financial Times Deutschland’ when questioned on the matter.

Hungarian Post Office predicts growth in insurance sales

Hungary’s postal service said two insurers that it jointly co-operates with Germany’s HDI Group have seen strong sales so far in their first year of operation, and anticipate further growth in 2004, as new auto and life insurance products make their way into the market.
