UK Postal services: mail superiority

Postcomm argues that the delay in sanctioning new entrants into the postal market is in the best interests of competition. In the meantime, mailing houses are discovering a change in mindset at Royal Mail. Michele Witthaus reports

Possible anthrax finding mail center closes dozen mail facilities

The Postal Service closed 11 Washington-area post offices while authorities ran tests to determine whether anthrax was detected at the Navy site that handles mail for federal agencies.

Postal Service spokesman Azeezaly Jaffer said authorities decided “out of an abundance of caution” to close the facilities and test them for any biohazard contamination.

Deutsche Post reports lower earnings, cites drop in stamp prices

Mail and express delivery company Deutsche Post AG have said that lower stamp prices in its German home market and a weaker dollar caused its third-quarter net profit to drop 7.6% despite a 2.6% rise in sales.

Net profit fell to euro219 million ($252 million) from euro237 million in the same period a year ago, while revenue rose to €9.71 billion ($11.16 billion) from €9.46 billion.

Notaries and Brazil Postal Service launch online joint venture

Brazil’s association of notaries, Anoreg, has invested 4mn reais (US$1.3mn) to launch an online notary service in partnership with the country’s postal service, Empresa Brasileira de Correios, and local bank Bradesco, executives told an online press conference Thursday. Customers will file a request for a notary document – from births and marriages to property rights – through the web site (www.cartorio24horas.com.br), which is delivered by the post office to the nearest notary office, and which will post documents back to the customer. Customers will be able to monitor progress online, and the total time for certificate to be delivered is estimated to be between 4 and 9 days.
