UK Royal Mail staff return to work after strike

Thousands of Royal Mail staff have returned to work against a backdrop of better relations between management and the Communication Workers’ Union, bringing to an end a two-week unofficial postal strike.

UK Royal Mail fears losing business to its rivals

Royal Mail could lose even more business following the strike by postal workers, rivals warned. The organisation, which is already in financial trouble, said it could not yet put a cost on the strike but feared that it would run into tens of millions of pounds. Lost business could cost even more. “It is a sad fact of life, but we have lost the confidence of our customers,” a spokesman said.

Singapore Post announces 9.5% fall in Q2 profit

Singapore’s dominant postal services group, Singapore Post Ltd, has announced a 9.5% fall in second-quarter net profit at S$24.19 million from a year ago.

Last year’s net profit for the same quarter was S$26.75 million.

SingPost’s revenue fell 2.3% to S$89.2 million as international mail revenue dropped.

Deutsche Post plans to expand collection boxes to parcels

Deutsche Post, the German postal service, is planning to expand its new ‘Packstation’ system, which involves a network of collection boxes for parcels, located in petrol stations and supermarkets. Recipients are informed by e-mail or text message when a parcel has arrived, and can collect their package at any time of the day or night using a customer number and a personal code. There are currently 75 of these boxes in Germany, and Deutsche Post is hoping to raise the number to 650 in 2004.

TNT Express launches new road services to Serbia

TNT Express has announced a further expansion to its European Road Network (ERN). They are now offering a new daily service to Belgrade, Serbia which becomes the 32nd country to join the ERN. The route connects the Serbian capital to the other 31 countries and 522 depots in the ERN via major hubs in Vienna and Timisoara.

Regional Russian Post Offices to be merged into unitary enterprise

Since 01 January 2004 all the post offices of the Russian regions will be united into one unitary enterprise “Pochta Rossii”. Igor Syrtsov, Director General of the Federal Unitary Enterprise “Pochta Rossii” made this statement in Nizhny Novgorod at the special conference on Friday. It should be noted that the following officials participated in the conference: Viktor ratnikov, Deputy RF President Plenipotentiary to the Volga district, Andre Melnikov, Director General of the Federal Unitary Enterprise “Pochta Rossii”, Directors of divisions and departments of “Pochta Rossii” Enterprise, etc.
