UK Royal Mail and DMA bring in QMP

An award called the Quality Standard for Mail Production (QMP) has been instigated by the Royal Mail and the Direct Marketing Association is beginning to attract growing interest, although the numbers so far of those who have been accredited at this juncture are as yet few.

One trade house that has successfully gained accreditation is Glasgow Laminators and Ian Trengrouse direct mail manager says: “We have always been focused on giving a quality service but this award will raise quality levels across the industry.”

Modernisation and slimming down called for at La Poste

In the new state plan contract drawn up for La Poste, the French national postal service operator, outlining targets and plans for the period 2003-07, it is envisaged that a sum of 1bn euros be invested in the modernisation of sorting offices, and that the group create a credit institution capable of providing property loans without prior savings with effect from 2005.

FedEx to play bigger role in Thailand

FedEx Express Corp is drafting a long-term investment roadmap for its Thai operations following the recent signing of a Thai-US “open skies” agreement for the air cargo industry.

A FedEx executive said the air cargo company would expand operations in Thailand but the Philippines would remain its hub for Asian operations.

“We are now looking to play a bigger role and to invest more in increasing flight capacity and upgrading facilities in Thailand, with a significant outlay projected for next year,” said David Cunningham, president of FedEx Asia Pacific. He declined to elaborate on the investment figure.

FedEx Custom Critical now offers overnight heavyweight freight deliveries to Mexico via a new service, Point-to-Point Mexico.

TNT launches new Thailand hub

After considerable expansion in TNT’s Don Muang Airport operation, Thailand will officially become the fourth country in the company’s Asia network to be granted hub status. The new 24/7 airport operation, opened in February 2003, is dedicated to Express services covering import, export and trans-shipment consignments.

DHL wins Asia awards

DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, has won the highly coveted Express and Mail Operator of the Year Award for the second year running and also clinched the IT Innovation Award at the Asia Logistics Award Ceremony held recently in Singapore.

It said in a statement that it outperformed other competitors on the strength of its coverage in the region, its unique understanding of the markets and the outstanding quality of its service.

Court of Auditors unimpressed by La Poste's new business plan

The French Court of Auditors, which presented its report on the management of La Poste between 1991 and 2002, is less than enthusiastic about the national postal services group’s new business plan for the period 2003-2007. The Court estimates that La Poste is not in a strong position to face competition on the mail market, neither in terms of its financial situation, nor the quality of its service.

Azure Dynamics and USPS sign prototype agreement

Azure Dynamics Corporation, a leading developer of hybrid electric powertrains for commercial vehicles and United States Postal Service, the world’s leading provider of mailing and delivery services, are pleased to announce the signing of an agreement whereby Azure will test and retrofit two USPS vehicles with Azure’s “Smart Energy Management” hybrid technology.

Azure will develop a prototype gas hybrid electric powertrain for USPS’s carrier route vehicle (CRV) as well as a prototype diesel hybrid electric powertrain for the USPS two-ton step van. USPS operates approximately 140,000 CRV’s and 10,000 step vans.
