US Post offices to encourage public recycling

A Colorado congressman is drafting legislation that would require post offices across the country to encourage the public to recycle unwanted mail by allowing local organizations to place recycling containers in post office lobbies.

“Placing recycling containers at these facilities would not only provide a convenience to postal patrons, it would also encourage the recycling of tons of unwanted mail and keep these materials from filling up local landfill space,” said Rep. Mark Udall, D-Colo.

Stocks gain on encouraging Motorola earnings

Better-than-expected profits from Motorola lifted Wall Street higher Monday as investors grew more optimistic that third-quarter earnings in general will be strong. The Dow Jones industrials rose nearly 90 points to a 16-month high.

Volume was light as the bond market was closed for Columbus Day and Japan’s financial markets were closed for a national holiday.

At the moment about 65 percent of the company’s income comes from traditional postal services, such as letter and post card delivering. In the future the share of these services in the income may be reduced to 35-40 percent, mainly as a result of the appearance of new services.
