Australia Post lifts despite letter drop

Letter volumes fell slightly last year – the result of cost-focused businesses amalgamating their bills into one statement, less junk mail with the slowdown in advertising and increased internet transactions – but Australia Post still lifted its net profit 11.4% to $330.8 million.

The profit increase was driven in part by Australia Post lifting the price of a basic postage stamp in January from 45¢ to 50¢.

DHL is Oracle’s new shipping partner

The world’s largest software supplier Oracle has chosen DHL, the market leader in the international express business, to be its partner for parcel and document shipping. The arrangement between the two leading companies initially covers the dispatch of items within the USA. In the long term there are plans for the partnership to be extended to Europe, Asia and Latin America.

DHL to open €500m center in Prague

The courier company DHL plans to invest €500m (US$588 million)in a new regional information technology operations center in Prague, the company announced.

Plans call for the Prague center to be fully running in 2005 and to employ up to 1,000 people by 2006, making it a significant foreign investments into the Czech capital.

The center will serve as the key IT facility for DHL in Europe. The company has similar operations centers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Scottsdale, Arizona.

UK Post Office and bank of Ireland announce joint venture

Post Office Ltd and Bank of Ireland Group have announced that they have agreed the key commercial terms for a financial services joint venture. The new company will launch Post Office branded financial services products early in the New Year through the Post Office branch network, via the telephone and website.

The product range will include personal loans, savings accounts, credit cards, personal insurance and mortgages.

Post Office Ltd carried out extensive market research over the past 18 months among 20,000 customers. The research clearly indicated a market for financial services products offering a combination of trust, simplicity, reliability, convenience and security – characteristics all associated with the Post Office Ltd brand.
