TPG eyeing stake in Belgian Post

TPG, the Dutch mail and logistics firm, said it could be interested in buying a majority stake in the struggling Belgian postal service.

Belgian media reports quoted TPG Chief Executive Peter Bakker as saying his firm was eyeing a stake in the publicly owned loss-making De Post/La Poste.

“Belgium is a very important market in Europe and if something is moving there, we owe it to ourselves,” Bakker was quoted as saying. He added that TPG was not currently in talks on buying a stake. A TPG spokesman confirmed the reports.

Australia Post 'most reliable service'

The nation’s postal service is the most reliable and one of the cheapest in the world, according to Australia Post’s annual report.

The report, tabled in federal parliament today, showed Australia Post’s on-time letter delivery reached an all time high of 96.5% in the 2002/2003 financial year.

Royal Mail fined £7.5m for missing targets

Royal Mail was fined £7.5m yesterday for missing targets on two of its business services, hours before a planned 24-hour strike by postal workers.

Postcomm, the industry’s regulator, said that the company’s performance on postage-paid services had failed its customers. The fine, one of the biggest handed out by a regulator, was described as “heavy” by the Royal Mail, which is losing £750,000 a day.

UK London postal strike could cost Royal Mail £10m

Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier has warned that this week’s 24 hour postal strike in London could cost the national carrier up to £10m.

Said Crozier: “Some of the London postcode areas are among the worst performing in the country. If Royal Mail is to hit its targets this current year then it’s vital that service in London improves. It is madness, therefore, for the union to inflict further financial damage through strike action.”

Kuehne & Nagel to acquire Pracht Spedition + Logistik

Kuhne & Nagel Germany has entered into an agreement with Hapag -Lloyd to purchase the forwarding and logistics company Pracht, based in Haiger / Hesse, effective January 1, 2004.

Pracht, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hamburg-based Hapag-Lloyd, reported a 2002 turnover of almost €200 million. Pracht manages over 140,000 m2 of warehousing and logistics space, with central warehouses in central Germany (Haiger and Rennerod), and branches in Kassel, Stadtallendorf, Siegen and Wetzlar. With around 900 employees and a network of over 100 regular line operations to all the German and European economic centres, the company focuses on industry-specific contract logistics solutions.

BMW selects DHL for Korea auto hub

DHL Danzas Air & Ocean has been awarded a five-year contract to manage BMW’s vehicle distribution center in South Korea. DHL Danzas Air & Ocean Korea will operate integrated warehousing and distribution for BMW Korea, including storage and customs clearance, the company said.

UK Royal Mail announces customer compensation scheme

Royal Mail has introduced new compensation arrangements for customers.

The new compensation scheme gives customers 12 times the cost of First Class postage for First Class letters that arrive more than four working days after posting and for Second Class letters that arrive more than six working days after posting. Customers will be given £3.36 worth of postage in a book of First Class stamps. Business customers will get refunds on their postage bills if Royal Mail does not meet regulatory performance targets.
