UK Royal Mail loses media markets chief

Adam Novak, who played a key role in developing the Royal Mail’s media markets strategy, is leaving the organisation after 12 years.

Novak, who has been director and general manager of Royal Mail Wholesale since the beginning of the year, says he has no definite job lined up, but that he plans to leave after Christmas.

UK Royal Mail prices to rise less than inflation

Royal Mail’s domestic postage prices will rise on average by a below-inflation 1.2% from April 1 2004, it was announced.

The price of a basic First Class stamp will remain unchanged at 28p. Basic Second Class postage will rise 1p to 21p.

First Class prices for heavier letters will fall but there will be increases for heavier Second Class mail. Parcels sent by Royal Mail will cost more, but there will be no change to Parcelforce Worldwide’s prices for express, time-guaranteed parcels. Most international prices will also rise from April 1.

UK Royal Mail signs away postal monopoly after 300 years

Royal Mail have signed a ground-breaking deal that paves the way for competitors to begin using its postal delivery network to reach every home in the country.

The agreement, struck with the private mail group Business Post, will open up the UK postal market to genuine competition for the first time in 300 years by allowing rival operators access to Royal Mail’s “final mile” network of 1,400 delivery centres and 170,000 postmen.

The deal with Business Post is expected to open the way for much bigger operators such as the Dutch and German post offices to enter the UK market as it is progressively liberalised.

Argentine Postal Service declares bankruptcy

The Argentine Judiciary has declared the privately-run Postal Service to be in bankruptcy and has prohibited its largest shareholder, Italian-American businessman Francisco Macri, and other top officials from leaving the country.

Judge Eduardo Favier Dubois ruled that the entity was bankrupt less than a month after the government cancelled the Postal Service’s concession for non-fulfillment of its contract.

Postcomm confirms £7.5m penalty on UK Royal Mail

Following consultation, Postcomm has confirmed a financial penalty of £7.5 million on Royal Mail for failings in its services to customers.

The penalty relates to two of Royal Mail’s services used by business customers: First Class Post Paid Impression (PPI) and First Class Response Services, where the company’s performance was around 6% below the agreed licensed targets for the year for both products.

EWS turns to high court for clarity on UK Royal Mail contract

UK freight train company EWS has launched High Court proceedings against Royal Mail, which is to axe all overnight mail train services.

EWS has confirmed that papers filed with the London High Court at the end of September have asked a judge to ‘clarify’ some disputed clauses relating to ‘service performance’ in the 10-year contract with Royal Mail.

A spokesperson for EWS said: ‘We are seeking clarification by the court of an issue relating to Royal Mail’s interpretation and of performance criteria.’
