Dutch govt keeps KPN golden share, no TPG comment

The Dutch Finance Ministry has said that the state retains its “golden share” in Dutch telecoms group KPN and has no plans to surrender this soon.

Finance Ministry spokesman William Lelieveldt said “The state still has a golden share in KPN and there are no plans on the short-term to give this up,”.

Lelieveldt declined comment on whether the Dutch government also plans to reduce its around 30% stake in postal group TPG.

UK Postal Workers Reject National Strike

The threat of the first national mail strike for seven years has evaporated after postal workers narrowly rejected calls to take industrial action over pay. In an embarrassing reverse for union leaders, members of the communication workers union (CWU) voted by a majority of fewer than 2,000 against staging a series of walkouts.

TNT Express combines U.S., Canada units

TNT Express announced Thursday that it has combined its U.S. and Canadian operations. “This new organization capitalizes on our collective strength and expertise within Canada and the USA,” said Curtis Watson, president of TNT North America. Watson, a native of Canada who has run TNT’s U.S. operation since January 2001, said the merger will have no adverse impact on sales and operations in Canada. “This will be completely transparent to our customers,” he said. Customer service functions that had been handled in Canada will be transferred to Houston, where the express operator runs a customer service center 24 hours a day, seven days a week. TNT said it is hiring French-speaking representatives in Houston to handle inquiries from Canada.

Palletforce passes 1m pallets

Records are tumbling this month at Palletforce. Its millionth pallet was handled on the 8th, two years almost to the day after it started operation. Lichfield International Freight – based 10 minutes from the hub – broke the record for pallets sent in one wee, at more than 1,000 and Wm Armstrong from Cumbria set a new record for pallets received, at 734.

New Zealand Post annual profit up

State-owned mail agency New Zealand Post announced a 24% rise in after-tax profit to $27.1 million for the year ended June 30.

Operating revenue rose by 1.9% to $976.9 million compared with the previous year, expenses held steady at $922.8 million, and NZ Post paid a total dividend of $16.2 million to the Government, up from $13.1 million the previous year.

FedEx reports solid first quarter revenue growth

FedEx Corporation has reported earnings of $0.42 per diluted share for the quarter ended August 31, including $0.27 per diluted share of costs associated with the previously announced realignment of the FedEx Express business through early retirement and severance programs and a one-time benefit of $0.08 per diluted share resulting from a court ruling in favor of the company over the tax treatment of jet engine maintenance costs. Excluding these costs and one-time benefit, earnings for the first quarter were $0.61 per diluted share. In last year’s first quarter, earnings were $0.52 per diluted share.
