Annual UBS Airfreight Survey Released

The annual UBS Airfreight Survey, questioning over 100 of the transportation purchasing managers of the Forbes Fortune 500 companies has been released.
Surprisingly, some 30% of those surveyed already use DHL in some capacity, and a further 29% indicated they were likely to give incremental business to DHLAirborne upon integration.

The conclusion is that a price war is unlikely before 2005, but U.S. price inflation will come to an end. They do not believe DHL will predatory price to gain market as the focus will be initially on integration.

Chronopost International buys out all of interholding (Top Chrono and TZF)

Already a 49% shareholder of the Interholding company, in July 2003 Chronopost International purchased the remaining 51% previously owned by the company Saturne SA. Interholding is made up of the companies Top Chrono – Saturne Courses (a company providing urban delivery on request, leaders in urban delivery in the Parisian region), TZF (specialists in regular delivery rounds) and TC Formation (Top Chrono training establishment). The total acquisition of Interholding’s activities allows the Chronopost International group to strengthen its professional synergy and to consolidate its portfolio of express services provided by the different trade names:
– Urban delivery: Top Chrono and TZF
– National and international same-day delivery: Taxicolis
– National and international express delivery: Chronopost International

TAT slashes jobs in new blow for French parcels

TAT Express, the French post office’s B2B express parcels arm, is poised to axe almost 500 jobs out of a total workforce of around 1,800.
This is the second major shake-out to be announced in the past month in France’s parcel sector, following news that ABX’s French unit is to shed 500 staff (out of 4,500) as part of a EUR40m cost-cutting programme.

Weakened by an acquisition strategy undertaken three years ago, ABX France posted an operating loss of EUR20m in 2002 on a turnover of EUR618m, 21% of ABX’s global turnover.

US Astar fears more trouble from competitors

Astar Air Cargo fears “more mischief” from its competitors even if a US Department of Transportation (DoT) inquiry backs its claim to be entirely independent of former owner DHL.

US law prohibits foreign interests from holding more than a 25% stake in a US airline. Integrators FedEx and UPS claim that Astar, formed in July when DHL sold its remaining stake to a group of US investors led by former DHL Airways CEO John Dasburg, is still under the effective control of Deutsche Post.

USPS to end netpost mailing online project

In a plug for its NetPost Mailing Online hybrid mail service, the US Postal Service web site says, “Upload your documents and we do the rest.”

Well, it appears the project hasn’t not been that successful or much of a revenue generator because the post wants to end the “experiment” and try to transition it over to a private operator. Targeted at small and medium-sized businesses, individuals and charitable organizations, the three-year-old NetPost service let mailers upload documents and mailing lists electronically to the post.

DHL data center to relocate to Prague

DHL will move its entire U.K.-based data center and other operations from London and Basel, Switzerland, to Prague where its new IT operations headquarters for all of Europe will be built by May 2004.

A source familiar with the negotiations said the new center would be located in Prague 4, in the new development of real estate investor and developer AIG/Lincoln. The project is called The Park and its total area will be 195,000 sqm.

Among the reported tenants are also IBM, BP and GE Capital Bank. DHL made the decision after an extensive review of its options for delivering high-quality, cost-effective IT operations and other services to their business, company representatives said.

Poste Italiane post net profit

Italian state-owned postal company Poste Italiane posted a net profit of €2.0m ($2.2m) for the first half of 2003, compared to a net loss of €61.9m ($68.6m) for the same period of 2002, it was reported on September 5, 2003.

UK government urges talks to halt Postal strike

Anxious ministers will exert strong pressure on Communication Workers Union leaders in Brighton this week to resume talks with the Royal Mail before a pay ballot commits the CWU to the first national postal strike for seven years.

Ministers, Royal Mail execu tives and union leaders are acutely aware that the ballot result is only nine days away and could lead to an all-out strike by 160,000 postal workers which, according to Allan Leighton, Royal Mail chairman, could last into next year.
