FedEx launches Khaosan Road world service centre in Thailand

FedEx has launched its new world service centre on Khaosan Road, catering to customers in one of Bangkok’s most popular tourist districts. The centre will meet the rising demand for express services from the Kingdom’s small to medium-sized business (SMEs).

The new world service centre is the sixth FedEx service point to open in Thailand in the past 18 months, joining similar facilities in Nana Square, Silom Galleria, Bangna, Pattaya and Chang Mai, providing customers with convenient access to fast and reliable express delivery to 220 countries and territories across the globe.

“FedEx’s global network makes it possible for Thai businesses to send their products to customers anywhere in the world, and we continue to increase services across the Kingdom, in response to customer demand,” said Clifton Chua, managing director for FedEx Thailand, Philippines and Indochina.

Postal unions face many challenges

Representatives from the Universal Postal Union (UPU), Pan African Union (PAU), Postal Operators Associations and representatives from different African countries have expressed their views on the challenges that the postal sector is facing within the developing countries. The permanent secretary in the Ministry of Transport, engineer Kudenga says the postal service unions in developing countries are witnessing dramatic changes in recent years, which includes, deregulation and globalization of markets, commercialization and new technologies such as internet and electronic commerce among other changes. He also noted that in response to these changes Zimbabwe has embarked on an extensive five year postal reform program in an effort to position our postal service more competitively in a rapidly changing environment.

TNT to sell off French truck unit

TNT has put up for sale its loss-making French trucking operations and expects to complete a deal this year, the Dutch post and logistics group said yesterday. The activities represent 60 per cent of the French unit, which has proved a drag on revenues for several quarters and has resisted efforts to stem losses running at EUR17m (USD20.6m) in the first half on revenues of EUR117m. TNT will also divest those parts of the remaining activities of the unit where it cannot earn its cost of capital, in order to focus on areas such as supply chain solutions for the automotive industry. French and international buyers are interested, said Peter Bakker, TNT chief executive, adding that it expected to complete the majority of the disposals this year. In total the portions to be sold account for 25 per cent of French logistics revenues of EUR250m, he said. The unit generated 5 per cent of logistics revenues of EUR1.2bn in the second quarter, and 2 per cent of group sales of EUR3.4bn.

DHL targets Thai overseas students

Delivery company DHL launched a new express service targeting university students who plan to study abroad, The Nation reports.

Named “University Express”, the new service has been designed exclusively for the fast delivery of students’ applications for admission to universities abroad.

“We have seen business potential in the market as there are about 40,000 students who send their applications to universities abroad every year,” said Herbert Vongpusanachai, managing director of DHL Express (Thailand) Ltd.

DHL currently accounts for more than 50 per cent of Thailand’s international express service for documents, according to the company.

He said that about 70 per cent of those students who have sent application forms to universities abroad seek to study in master’s degree programmes.

DHL Korea set to build new logistics center

DHL Korea Ltd., the South Korean affiliate of the global courier giant DHL, said Tuesday that it plans to establish a new logistics center in the city of Daejeon, about 160 kilometers south of Seoul.

The company said it plans to invest 4 billion won (USD3.92 million) to build the center on a 5,445 square meter site which will act as the company’s main overland transport logistics hub.

DHL Korea is currently in talks with local authorities on its site, it said. The expected date of completion was not immediately known.

The company plans to expand the facility to up to 16,500 square meters later.

DHL Korea is a joint venture between DHL International Ltd., a U.S.-based logistics giant, and South Korea’s Ilyang Group. It currently has 37 offices and six warehouses across the country.

UPS says China is company’s top priority

UPS has said that China is the company’s top priority and that the American firm was expanding flights and facilities in the Asian nation that has become a manufacturing powerhouse.

“China isn’t an option. It’s essential. It’s our No. 1 priority,” John Beystehner, chief operating officer at UPS, said at a conference hosted by the Atlanta-based company.

Beystehner said the company plans to establish a hub in the Chinese financial capital of Shanghai by 2007. The firm’s 18 weekly flights in and out of China would expand to 21 next year, he added.

By the end of this year, the company’s China operations plans to have 3,500 employees, 1,400 vehicles and 75 facilities, Beystehner said.

TNT Q2 results show strong mail/record express margins

The second quarter of 2005 showed continued good performance of the Mail and Express divisions. The Mail division reported another strong operating margin, despite higher pension costs, and the European Mail Networks business continued to record strong organic revenue growth of 20%. Express revenues grew double digit and operating income was up 28%, reaching another margin record. The division is firmly on track to reach its ambitious target of a 10% operating margin in 2007.
