Swiss Die Post to exercise option for stake in Liechtensteinische Post

Switzerland’s postal operator Die Post wants to exercise its option for a 25 pct stake of its Liechtenstein counterpart Liechtensteinische Post AG, the Liechtenstein Press Office said on June 7, 2005. The Liechtenstein Government has given a green light to the deal and Liechtensteinische Post is to decide on the matter in mid-June. The two postal carriers have agreed not to disclose details on the deal until then. Liechtensteinische Post did not comment on the price of the deal, but Die Post’s Daniel Mollet said it was a “single-digit sum in millions”.

Top UK firms lose out on mail consolidation services

Companies waste GBP251 million each year in international postage costs because they fail to use consolidation services.

This is according to research by mail communications specialist Corporate Mailing Matters (CMM) into the UK’s top 4,000 companies.

The study showed that for the top 500 companies failing to use mail consolidation – whereby discounts are received for pre-sorting post – equates to almost GBP280,000 per company annually.

Simon Harris, international business development manager at CMM said: “People believe Royal Mail is the be all and end all off postal services, but it’s not. I’m surprised people are still using Royal Mail when there is so much more out there.”

The research also claims that only five per cent of large companies use consolidation services, although it predicts this will rise to 40 per cent over the next three years.

NewVoiceMedia wraps up deal with Parcelforce Worldwide

Intelligent network services vendor NewVoiceMedia has been selected by Parcelforce Worldwide to provide a network-based inbound call handler service to all of the company’s 53 depots across the United Kingdom.

The deal will improve Parcelforce Worldwide’s management of inbound calls by offering call queuing, overflow between depots, and by automating the handling of simple queries and transactions from customers, ensuring that Parcelforce Worldwide’s staff are more readily available to deal with complex issues.

Parcelforce Worldwide staff who currently answer calls at the depots are not call centre staff, but are involved in the core business of collecting, sorting and distributing parcels. This ensures that customers will speak to someone who is best placed to deal with their enquiry.

TNT eyes acquisition in Asia, mulls takeover of Royal Mail’s GLS unit

TNT NV may soon acquire a shipping company in Asia to expand its network there and is interested in taking over Royal Mail Group PLC’s unit GLS Holding, German weekly magazine Wirtschafts Woche said in a report to be published tomorrow, citing chief executive Peter Bakker.

‘The US is UPS- and Fedex-land,’ Bakker told the magazine in an interview. ‘And whoever thinks, as Deutsche Post does, he can be profitable there with a 6-8 pct market share is wrong.’

Deutsche Post World Net AG’s package delivery arm DHL last month said it does not want to chase US market share from rival UPS and Federal Express and is reining in its ambitions in North America.

Bakker also said he can imagine taking over Royal Mail’s GLS unit as an independent parcel service, adding the company is ‘looking into every interesting opportunity for an acquisition’.

CVC Capital Partners buys 22 percent stake in Denmark’s postal service

The Danish government said Wednesday it had sold a 22 percent stake in national postal service Post Danmark A/S to investment company CVC Capital Partners for 1.27 billion kroner (EUR171 million; USD210 million).

Germany’s Deutsche Post and Dutch company TPG NV had previously said they were among the bidders.

Another 2.5 percent of the stakes were made available for an employee share program for Post Danmark’s nearly 22,000 employees. An additional 0.5 per cent will be reserved for an incentive program for senior staff of Post Danmark. The Danish state keeps the remaining stake.

“I’m confident that CVC Capital Partners will add extra momentum to Post Danmark’s development as an international operator,” Transport Minister Flemming Hansen said in a statement.

Mail partnership offers alternative to Royal Mail UK

DX Services, the B2B mail network, has signed a deal with high street postal services company Mail Boxes Etc (MBE), to target small- to medium-sized businesses.

The service is currently being rolled out through MBE’s 96 UK franchised outlets. Although DX has 4,500 document exchange collection points in the UK, it lacks visibility as many of these are in shared office facilities.

Companies will be able to walk into MBE stores to use one of two services: Assure DX, which offers guaranteed next day delivery; and Signe DX, a signature service. Post is handled by DX’s own network, including final mile delivery.

DX clients include Tesco, the Land Registry, British Gas and many of the UK’s law firms. The company handles 360 million items a year.

Secrets of my success: John Ivers, Managing director, DHL Global Mail

As someone who has spent nearly 25 years dealing with mail, it has been important for me to be able to adapt to the significant changes the UK mail industry has seen over the past few years.

I started out as a fresh-faced economics graduate on a management development programme at Pitney Bowes, where I experienced business at all levels, including general management, sales, customer service, marketing, finance and IT. It taught me that sending and receiving mail is the lifeblood of any business.

Those early days also taught me to listen to your customers. Expectations from customers have significantly changed over the years, and they increasingly want a more personalised service that offers them real value.
