DHL UAE steps up regional road freight business with USD3.5 million Jebel Ali hub

DHL UAE has stepped up its express logistics and road freight capability with the opening of a USD3.5 million state-of-the-art express logistics centre in Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZ), Dubai. The new facility will not only bolster DHL’s traditional express delivery capabilities, but will also provide a solid platform to capitalise on the growing demand for tailored express logistics solutions and road freight. ‘Over the past 12 months we have managed a 214% increase in weight handled through the Jebel Ali Free Zone. Customer demand continues to rocket and our new facility will provide us with the additional capacity necessary to offer even more customers full express logistics solutions,’ said David Wild, General Manager, DHL UAE. DHL’s new facility will manage and process throughput arriving in Jebel Ali by road, air or sea for rapid distribution by road or air. A fast evolving part of this market is coming from road haulage, with more international players now focussing on the segment.

US Postal Service warns it may drop AuthentiDate postmark if revenue doesn’t rise

AuthentiDate Holding Corp. has received notice from the US Postal Service that AuthentiDate’s Electronic Postmark service failed to meet necessary revenue standards between February and April 2005. A strategic alliance agreement between AuthentiDate and the Postal Service names the Schenectady company as the preferred provider of the USPS Electronic Postmark (EPM) service. When the agreement was signed, in August 2002, the parties agreed on certain performance standards, but sales have fallen short. The parties have been discussing a new arrangement since last year, but have been unable to agree on new performance standards. In a letter dated May 23, the Postal Service said it is willing to discuss any plans AuthentiDate may have to improve the EPM system’s revenue, but that it intends to exercise its right to terminate the agreement if AuthentiDate is unable to cure the default.

Irish post unions declare war on ‘doom and gloom’

The four An Post trade unions yesterday launched a nationwide campaign to outline their vision for a profitable future for the postal service. The ‘Vision for Growth’ blueprint was launched in Cork by the Communications Workers’ Union which publicly rejected what it slated as the “graveyard” scenario outlined by An Post management. CWU general secretary Steve Fitzpatrick said that the postal service has a bright future if specific commitments and changes are made. He warned that the trade unions were now “declaring war” on the doom-and-gloom outlook for the service by both An Post management and the Government.

Red Parcel Post to compete with Deutsche Post

A former board member of German postal services group Deutsche Post, Dieter Seegers-Kruckeberg, has announced plans to launch a low-cost parcel delivery company in Germany under the name of Red Parcel Post. Using new sorting and delivery technology, Mr. Seegers-Kruckeberg plans to offer significantly lower prices than rivals, such as Deutsche Post. There is speculation that prices could be as low as 2 euros per parcel, at least a third lower than the current market average. Mr. Seegers-Kruckeberg said that he was aiming to bring Red Parcel Post into operation at the end of 2006 or the start of 2007.

French Regulator ART changes name to Arcep

French telecommunications regulator ART has changed its name to Arcep (L’Autorite de Regulation des Communications Electroniques et des Postes), to take account of the French postal and electronic communications sector, it was reported on May 31, 2005. The name change has been planned since the beginning of 2005, but the new name was unveiled recently. Arcep (www.arcep.fr) was set up to regulate the liberalised postal and electronic communications sector.

Dutch TNT Reiterates 2005 Outlook

TNT NV, former TPG NV, has reiterated the earlier announced outlook for the company’s performance in 2005 at a press conference held on May 30, 2005.
TNT expects a one-digit year-on-year increase in turnover of its Express unit in 2005. The Post and Logistics units are expected to report unchanged year-on-year results for 2005. Chief executive officer (CEO) of TNT, Peter Bakker said he had confidence in achieving the targets set for 2005. According to the CEO, TNT will announce a number of cooperation agreements with Chinese companies in 2005. TNT continues looking for strategic options within Europe, Bakker concluded.

German DHL Express to promote Europlus Courier Service in Poland

German express delivery services provider DHL Express, a subsidiary of mail services group Deutsche Post, will start promoting its new courier service DHL Europlus in Poland on June 1, 2005, Aleksander Morozowski, CEO of the company’s Polish unit, said.

The promotion campaign, which will last for three months, is connected with the recent opening of DHL Express’s international parcels sorting centre in Zabrze, Silesia province, southern Poland.

During the company’s promotion campaign parcels from Zabrze centre will be delivered to countries south of Poland, including the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, France, Italy and Hungary, in two or three working days at a 50 pct discount price, Morozowski added.

DHL Europlus service enables customers to order a courier and to monitor the parcel shipment through the Internet.
