Japan Post unions raise objection to postal privatization plan

Japan Post’s two labor unions raised a strong objection Thursday to a government plan to divide up and privatize the postal system. “We cannot tolerate the plan as it would make the postal system, which serves as a social safety net and contributes to vitalizing the economy, collapse,” the Japan Postal Workers’ Union and the All Japan Postal Labor Union said in a statement.
They also said they reject the postal system privatization plan as it represents nothing more than Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi’s personal beliefs. “Japan should develop the postal system for the people by reforming Japan Post as a public corporation,” the statement said. The Koizumi administration is trying to pass postal system privatization bills through the Diet during the current session, which is scheduled to end in June.

TNT aims for home turf of China Post

Domestic express and direct mail advertising are two moneymakers critical to China Post, which has been eager to dominate them in the Chinese market through a new postal act under revision. Ken McCall, chief executive officer of TNT China, announced in Shanghai on March 30 that the company would start a first step toward its direct marketing plan in China since April 2, sending 5 million questionnaires in Shanghai, the engine of the nation’s economy. Its intention was to collect consumer information for products and services aimed at some industries. China Post is now challenged whether to lose the vast DM market to TNT, a world leading provider of express delivery services, logistics supply chain solutions and mail services, after greatly exploring the document delivery market in the country.

Consolidation gains momentum in Europe’s Express and Parcels market

The latest findings to emerge from independent market analyst Datamonitor’s (DTM.L) “European Express Benchmarking 2004,” research reveals that the European* 34 billion Euro express market is consolidating. The top 6 players in the industry account for over 50% of these revenues compared to 2001, when they accounted for 44% of the market value and 47% of that in 2002. “The European express industry forms one of the fastest growing segments in the transportation business. Industry consolidation has continued apace as express and parcel delivery companies merge, make acquisitions and form strategic alliances in order to gain scale and enhance their capabilities. 2005 promises new opportunities for these companies with the expansion of the EU. Europe’s fast moving express industry proves difficult to keep track of and the players must be aware of competitors’ operations, changes within the industry and opportunities,” says Emilio Pedrinaci, courier and express analyst at Datamonitor.

UPS accepts return ground packages at its drop boxes in the US

United Parcel Service now accepts UPS Ground Authorized Return Service packages and other ground return services at its 40,000 drop box locations, the Atlanta company said yesterday. UPS said it created the option because post-sales customer service is crucial to maintaining a competitive edge among home-based shoppers. In a Harris Interactive survey, 92 percent of online shoppers said they are “somewhat” or “very” likely to shop again with a retailer whose returns process suits them. Also, 85 percent said that if the returns process is inconvenient, they are “not very” or “not at all” likely to shop again with a direct retailer.

Business Post is delivering earlier

Business Post’s letter delivery division, which competes with Royal Mail in the partially liberalised UK postal market, is set to break even during its first year of trading, ahead of expectations. UK Mail is handling the equivalent of 250 million items a year following its launch last May and has almost 1 per cent of the market, Business Post said in a trading update. The service was set up by Business Post after Postcomm, the industry regulator, gave companies the right to enter the letters delivery market in 2003. The division’s progress will enable it to break even for the year to March 31, instead of incurring a small loss as previously expected.
