Middle East transport sector to undergo major changes

The Middle East’s transportation industry including the $10 billion (Dh36. 8 billion) logistics and express mail market is set for more competition, consolidation and privatisation in the coming five years, a study from The National Investor (TNI) said.

“Following the worldwide convergence towards ‘one stop shop’ supply chain and logistics management solutions, we believe the transportation industry in the Middle East is on the verge of revolutionary developments such as consolidation and privatisation,” said the comprehensive research report obtained by Gulf News. The report comes in the wake of the ongoing initial public offering (IPO) of Arab International Logistics Company that plans to acquire Aramex International.

The Middle East logistics market is valued at more than $10 billion with the GCC market accounting for about 10 per cent of this. The UAE accounts for roughly 35 per cent of the GCC but Saudi Arabia leads with a 55 per cent share.

Canada Post to act as middleman

Canada Post claims to have found a way to address concerns over ‘junk mail’ and spam by linking consumers and marketers, while protecting personal information.
The Fetch service enables consumers to respond to promotions from participating advertisers via phone, text message or online. Canada Post then acts as a middleman, passing on information, but safeguarding private details. The postal operator, credited with having gained a high level of public trust, is piloting the partnership with 12 businesses including Safeway, Telus and Domino’s Pizza. Warren Tomlin, director of marketing and communication, and co-inventor of Fetch, says: “A lot of media have no call-to-action, so there’s no way to respond. For the consumer, it’s about trust; for the advertiser, it’s about a qualified prospect.”

ABX builds non-DHL profits

ABX Air is finding that being independent is increasingly profitable, whether the former Airborne Express airline flies for DHL or not. The company reported a USD37 million net profit in 2004, nearly double the earnings for 2003, as the former Airborne Express air carrier saw revenue edge up to USD1.2 billion. The earnings included an USD18.1 million net profit in the fourth quarter on a 31 percent increase in revenue to USD361.4 million. Those earnings were spurred by an unexpected surge of package volume, up 29 percent over last year’s fourth quarter and 22.2 percent over third quarter 2004 totals. The strong financial report marked an important step in the airline’s path to independence since it was spun off from Airborne in 2003 following DHL’s purchase of the express operator. DHL accounts for the huge majority of ABX’s revenue but the airline said its non-DHL revenue grew from USD11.6 million in 2003 to USD26.7 million last year.
