Palletways looks at moving to gas

Palletways this week confirmed it is trialling gas-fuelled forklift trucks. Operations director Kath McCann says: “We are looking into the environmental benefits of using gas-fuelled forklifts and have recently received delivery of a demonstration vehicle. We are hopeful that the results will be positive.” Gas power, which has been adopted by some other large hubs, would do away with a need for lift truck drivers to wear masks to protect themselves from fumes.

UPS, FedEx pilots contract dispute heats up

Pilots at passenger airlines aren’t the only ones feuding with their managements about new contract terms. Pilots at two cargo airlines are in contract talks, too. The disputes at shipping giants UPS Inc. and FedEx Corp., however, don’t involve pay cuts, as both companies are offering wage increases.
Beyond pay, these pilots say their benefits and work rules are just as important – if not more important. UPS pilots have run newspaper advertisements prodding management to reach an agreement with them and have authorized their union to call a strike if necessary. Today, they will do informational picketing outside company storefronts in several cities. At FedEx, the company has asked for a federal mediator to join talks with its pilots. The major issues the companies and their pilot unions are grappling with in the talks include pay, pensions, work rules, health benefits and job security.

UPS Pilots: set date certain request for release; claim UPS making big gamble

Independent Pilots Association has given UPS until December 23 to finalize the contract it began negotiating with its pilots in October 2002. “It has become clear that UPS’ recent overture for a settlement is not genuine, but a cynical move timed to prevent any disruption during Christmas Peak. Christmas 2005 will be our fourth holiday season during this contract negotiation, that’s long enough,” said Capt. Tom Nicholson, President of the Independent Pilots Association. He went on to say, “UPS has one more shot to deliver a contract that our pilot group can ratify when we get together with the National Mediation Board the week of December 19 thru 23 in Wisconsin.”

Minister rules out aid to UK Royal Mail to clear Pounds 4bn pensions deficit

Any “bail-out” of Royal Mail’s Pounds 4bn pension fund deficit by taxpayers was yesterday ruled out by the government in the first clear statement of its plans for the state-owned postal operator in the run-up to full market competition next year. But the minister responsible for Royal Mail held out the prospect there could be extra government money to help pay for new equipment. MPs were told by Barry Gardiner, competitiveness minister, the government might breach European state aid laws if it agreed to the company’s request to put billions of pounds into the pension fund. “We should not be seen as the bailer-out, the funder of last resort,” he said. Asked if the government should be prepared to make at least some contribution to reducing the deficit, which has rendered Royal Mail technically insolvent, the minister said: “No. This should be done (dealing with the deficit) as it would be commercially.”
