Bank of India launches Pensioner's credit card

Bank of India today announced the launch of Pensioners’ Credit Card and Pension Delivery at Doorsteps schemes here in collaboration with the postal department.

The scheme would allow the pensioners to get their pensions at their doorstep without going through the ordeal of coming to the branch, Bank of India Chairman and Managing Director M Balachandran told reporters.

The bank has tied up with the Post Office to deliver the pension at the doorsteps of the pensioner, he said adding the schemes has been launched on a pilot basis in Maharashtra.

The credit card allows for a maximum credit limit of Rs 50,000 and the rate of interest charged is 12 per cent per annum.

The bank has about 1.8 lakh pensioners as its customers in Maharashtra.

DHL spearheads inaugural Young Entrepreneurs for Sustainability (YES) Awards 2007

DHL announced the launch of its Young Entrepreneurs for Sustainability (YES) Awards, an awards program dedicated to recognizing and celebrating social entrepreneurs in Asia Pacific who are making positive social impact in their communities to meet the UN MDGs.

The DHL YES Awards support social entrepreneurs whose work evidences commitment towards the achievement of one or more of the UN MDGs and will evaluate key elements related to leadership, innovation, social impact, the potential to expand and replicate their work else where, the sustainability of the initiative and challenges overcome.

The DHL YES Awards will be rolled out in five countries in Asia Pacific – Bangladesh, Pakistan, The Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. A national winner will be chosen from each of the five participating countries, and an Asia Pacific regional winner will be selected from the five national winners. Singapore will play host to the final awards ceremony to be held in the middle of the year.

In each country, an independent screening organization will review all applications and a jury composed of imminent national leaders in the social, development and business sectors will select the national awardees. The overall awards program has been endorsed by an international council of reputable members who will also select the regional winner.

Japan's Sankyu signs agreement with Pos Malaysia

Major distribution company SANKYU INC. has struck a business cooperation agreement with Pos Malaysia BHD, farming out pickup and delivery of parcels for the Sankyu Business Yu-Pack service in Malaysia to the postal service provider. Developed by Sankyu and Japan Post, the small-lot international door-to-door parcel delivery service for businesses is often used by Japanese firms to export parts and import textile products.

With pickup and delivery offered only in limited areas in Malaysia, the service’s handling of parcels to and from that nation has remained at around 1 ,000 a month.

Sankyu hopes the tie-up will boost the figure to 10,000 by the end of fiscal 2007.

Fonseca appointed COO for TNT Western European Business Unit

TNT Express has appointed Mark Fonseca as Chief Operating officer for it’s new Western European Business unit.

Fonseca has been with the company for almost 20 years in numerous positions and will take up the role with immediate effect. Foncseca will report to Chief Executive Donald Pilz and will handle activities in Germany, Benelux, France and Italy. The ‘Western European Business Unit’ is one of six new international business units strategically located worldwide. The other five are situated in UK/Ireland, Americas-Middle East-Africa, China, Australia & New Zealand, and International.

Postcomm reviews notification process for Royal Mail product trials

Postcomm, the independent regulator for postal services, is consulting to determine the most appropriate notification process for trials of new products and product changes by Royal Mail.

Postcomm and Royal Mail have been in discussions aimed at developing an approach to the notification of product trials and changes which is more streamlined than the approach set out currently in Royal Mail’s licence.

Postcomm wishes to ensure there is a pragmatic approach to trials which benefits users of postal services by encouraging innovation without hampering the development of competition in the market for postal services.

The consultation outlines Postcomm’s proposal for a new process for notification of trials and also sets out the background to the issue, and the regulator seeks views from stakeholders and interested parties on these proposals.

Postcomm grants licence exemption to Royal Mail for changes to Sameday Service

Postcomm, the independent regulator for postal services, has decided to approve an application from Royal Mail for an exemption from the notification requirements under Condition 7 of its licence for changes to its Sameday service.

Condition 7 of its licence requires Royal Mail to notify Postcomm of any changes to existing prices and services three months before they are introduced and to publish information about such changes after this notification.

Following consultation on this issue, Postcomm approved Royal Mail’s request on the basis that Sameday appears to be offered in a developed sector of the market, so that lifting the notification requirements for this service should not adversely affect customers

Correos de Chile happy with progress

The year 2006 was a mixed one according to the general director of Correos de Chile, Patricio Tapia; the postal service was able to grow traffic and sales if a study carried out in September is to be trusted; in detail, the report suggested that Correos de Chile boasted an 80% postal market share and that it had grown its 8% packages and courier segment share to 17%; the company’s profits had been expected to peak at below USD 3.7mil but in the end Correos de Chile has been able to record USD 4.4mil for 2006. It will bring in a speedy packages and courier service in late 2007 and will also look to improve its transport network so as to keep up with growth (its transport is outsourced, Decatrans being its main provider).

UPS hits US 'bump in the road'

UPS has warned it faces a “challenging year” in the US as the slowing domestic economy puts the brakes on parcel shipments.
Shares in the group were down more than 3 per cent yesterday afternoon after it issued lower-than-expected earnings guidance for 2007 and said the year had started slowly in the US.
But Scott Davis, chief financial officer, remained “bullish” about the long-term outlook, predicting that the US slowdown would prove short-lived.
Mike Eskew, chief executive, said domestic weakness would be offset by continued strength in international business this year, predicting that global trade would remain robust.
Surging international shipments, particularly from Europe and Asia, helped lift fourth-quarter net profits by 7.5 per cent, in spite of weaker-than-expected US volumes in the peak shipping season before Christmas.
UPS has invested heavily in its international network over the past decade to take advantage of soaring cross-border trade and reduce dependence on the mature US market.
UPS is building a new Asian hub in Shanghai, China, and last year completed a Dollars 135m expansion of its European hub in Cologne, Germany, almost doubling capacity.
International revenues rose 10 per cent in the fourth quarter, compared with a 4 per cent increase in domestic business.
