Indian express industry set for sizzling growth

India’s express industry is expected to register a growth of at least 20 per cent per annum during the next five years and more than double its size by 2012, according to a study by rating agency Credit Analysis & Research (CARE). Opening of banking, insurance, retail, aviation and telecom sectors and their penetration to smaller cities would be the major growth driver.

According to CARE, the size of India’s courier industry currently stands at around Rs 7,100 crore and is estimated to have grown at a CAGR of around 33 per cent over the past decade. At its current estimated size, the courier industry is larger than the tea industry and close to the size of paper and shipping industries in India.
The industry is highly fragmented with more than 2500 express players and a few large sized players account more than half of the industry revenues.

The industry contributes more than Rs 1000 crore to the government revenues by way of service tax, income tax and other levies and it offers employment opportunity to about a million people.

Amongst domestic players Blue Dart, DTDC, First Flight and Overnite Express are leading express services companies in India while UPS, FedEx, DHL and TNT are leading international players presence in the country. According to the CARE survey, the industry players earn about 52 per cent of its revenues from document parcels.

DHL launches WEEE Roadshows

DHL Environmental Compliance Solutions is holding a series of seminars to help businesses get to grips with the new WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) legislation introduced to the UK earlier this month.

The WEEE regulations affect retailers, importers and brand owners of electrical products, forcing them to take responsibility for the safe and responsible treatment of disused electrical products and appliances.

DHL is concerned that while big businesses understand the new regulations and have put processes in place to fulfill their WEEE obligations, many smaller companies have not even heard of the new legislation. And with the 15th March deadline fast approaching for businesses to register with an approved compliance scheme, companies need to act quickly.

DHL is holding free seminars in the UK in nine cities in February and early March.

Why are stamp prices rising yet again?

The cost of domestic stamps in Canada will inch up a cent tomorrow to 52 cents, nearly quadruple the price in 1976. In the past decade, stamp prices have risen seven times.

Starting tomorrow, letters headed for the United States will cost Canadians 93 cents, an increase of four cents.

Despite many beliefs, Canada Post isn’t given free rein to raise prices. By government regulation, stamp prices can only rise by no more than two-thirds of the yearly inflation rate.

The corporation, though, faces a host of technological and demographic challenges.

Individual “snail mail” use has dropped as Canadians have begun choosing e-mail over traditional penmanship and companies have begun to consolidate various services into one bill, Canada Post recently reported.

Coupled with rising inflation, skyrocketing fuel prices and a yearly population increase of about 240,000 residents, who add more than CD20 million in extra expenses, the Crown corporation says it needs to recoup the costs.

Increased terminal dues, charged to Canada Post by foreign countries receiving mail from here, have also translated to additional costs for the company, it said.

In a statement, the corporation pointed out that while Canadians will pay CD1.55 for regular mail to foreign countries besides the United States a six-cent increase the British paid CD2.28 for mail to Canada and Germans paid CD2.79.

EU holds sway over UK post office funds

Bridgwater’s MP Ian Liddell-Grainger stated in the January 6 issue of the Bridgwater Times that he hopes to clarify the situation regarding post office closures and is mystified as to why post offices need to be closed when there is an annual rural grant of GBP150 million.

The right to give state aid was signed away by the British Government to the EU and now permission has to be sought from that body before the Government can give aid – the post office being a prime example of this state of affairs.

The permission for the subsidy was initially granted by the EU for three years and the present subsidy finishes in 2008.

The EU has not agreed to an extension.

The plight of post offices has been exacerbated by the withdrawal of such services as the sale of TV licences, as well as pressure on pensioners to make alternative arrangements for receiving their pensions.

The sum of GBP150 million is set with no adjustment for inflation.
