DHL first in Asia Pacific logistics industry to implement ISO standards across entire business

DHL announced that its freight forwarding business unit, DHL Global Forwarding, has become the first in the industry to fully implement two of the International Organization for Standardization’s (ISO) best known standards – ISO 9001:2000 for quality management and ISO 14001:2004 for environmental management.

DHL Global Forwarding’s entire operation in Asia Pacific, covering over 200 facilities across 14 countries, has received the full certification and is now aligned to ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004’s globally implemented standards for quality management and environmental management systems.

The ISO 9001:2000 certification emphasizes DHL Global Forwarding’s consistent quality management processes which it has established and continued to develop to increase customer satisfaction. DHL’s internal processes go beyond the basic conditions set by ISO and include key performance indicators for all functions, compliance checks and reviews and customer feedback mechanisms.

In addition to this, 5 pct of DHL Global Forwarding’s staff has been trained as Lead Auditors. They regularly conduct internal compliance audits to ensure the continued effectiveness of the system and identify opportunities for improvement in service excellence.

The ISO 14001:2004 certification means that DHL Global Forwarding has successfully met the requirements for environmental management systems, and confirmed its intention to operate in an environmentally sustainable manner.

DHL UAE switches to eco-friendly courier bags

DHL Express announced that the company will replace its regular plastic bags with new environmentally-friendly bags.

The new bags are not only stronger but are also fully reusable and recyclable and can degrade in as little as two years, leaving behind just natural elements: water, carbon dioxide and biomass. Conventional plastic bags, on the other hand, can take up to one thousand years to degrade; increasing landfill volume and contributing to the hazardous build-up of methane in landfill sites.

The switch to biodegradable bags is part of DHL’s worldwide initiative to reduce its environmental footprint across the 220 countries in which it operates. The move comes at a time when the most recent industry research indicates that the Middle East region and the UAE in particular, has an urgent need to focus on environmental sustainability.

TNT Express and ORTEC sign strategic global contract on network optimisation

TNT Express has signed a strategic global contract to optimise TNT Express’ global infrastructure and networks through the provision of and access to ORTEC’s state-of-the-art optimisation knowledge and solutions. Together, ORTEC and TNT will seek to optimise network solutions as part of the Global Optimisation (GO) programme to further enable the standardisation of TNT’s infrastructure on a global scale, as well as enhance the operational transformation and integration of TNT’s newly acquired companies in Spain, Brazil, India and China. The solutions will also include carbon footprint calculations for improving sustainability and reducing carbon emissions – an essential component of TNT’s Planet Me programme.

‘Network optimisation is critically important to TNT in achieving our strategic focus and aspirations,’ says Mark Bradley, Global Operations Director of TNT Express. ‘Already, initial results of the partnership are most promising. ORTEC solutions have already been introduced in several countries around the world and delivered significant unit cost optimisation and service improvements in all functional areas of operations.’

The GO-Toolbox consists of several ORTEC solutions, each of which contains advanced optimisation techniques. The solutions are specially tuned to optimise each of the components of the TNT Express supply chain – from line haul networks, hubs and country infrastructure to pick ups and deliveries. The solutions can either be used individually or as part of an integral programme of activities, leading to network wide optimisation possibilities.
