DHL supports international NGO Plan Japan

DHL has supported a gift campaign that ran from October 15 to November 5 in Japan. The¡¡campaign was organized by Plan Japan, an international NGO with its Japan headquarters located in Tokyo. DHL supported this campaign by transporting more than 15,000 gifts to children in 40 developing countries free-of-charge. DHL proactively supports the healthy nurturing of children as part of its Corporate Sustainability Program, and this is the fifth time that DHL has cooperated with Plan Japan on a similar project, since the first in 2003.

Headquartered in the UK, Plan supports community development with children in 49 developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America benefiting from its programs. In this development project, people who provide sustained support are referred to as a sponsor, and they can interact with the children they support through the exchange of letters and gifts.

This year, DHL Express Japan transported 130 Jumbo Boxes, a service which delivers parcels up to 25kg – containing over 15,000 gifts to children from their sponsors. Plan Japan usually sets a weight limit of 50 grams per person on packages sent to children by the sponsors, but this was raised to 150 grams per person during the campaign period. As a result, there was participation by approximately 14,000 sponsors nationwide who sent heartwarming gifts such as stationery, toys and other gifts – items that the normal weight limit would have prevented them from sending.

In addition, DHL did not limit its support to just delivering the packages. Thirteen volunteers from DHL Express Japan helped to sort the presents by destinations before packaging them, as well as performed other volunteer work such as re-wrapping the presents.

Business forum reveals hidden green opportunity of GBP 150 billion in UK supply-chain

The business opportunity in sustainability amounts to around GBP 150 billion per year, according to Base (Business and A Sustainable Environment), an environmental UK forum for business. Speaking yesterday, Gordon Brown MP underlined the economic benefits that the new market in sustainability could offer UK plc.

The research published by base demonstrates for the first time the extent of environmental requirements being applied by major companies and public sector bodies to their supply-chains in the face of concern about climate change. This means that up to GBP 150 billion-worth of contracts annually could be available to the businesses which are informed about and act on these requirements.

Base, which is backed by large businesses, government departments and third sector organisations, has been set up specifically to provide practical information to commercial organisations about how to understand and capitalise on the green profit opportunity. It will bring together large organisations with environmental programmes and obligations, and potential suppliers. Tom Burke, the chairman of base, said “It is becoming increasingly clear that business is going to have to play a bigger role than it has so far if we are to succeed in tackling climate change. However, because there has been little coherence in the approaches adopted by different public authorities to sustainability, the business environment has been subject to diverse and sometimes conflicting policy currents on these issues until now.

'Keep America Beautiful' awards UPS

Keep America Beautiful, Inc., the nation’s largest nonprofit community improvement organization, awarded UPS its 2007 Vision for America Award at the 22nd anniversary dinner in New York City Tuesday. Michael L. Eskew, Chairman and CEO of UPS, accepted the award on behalf of UPS’ more than 425,000 employees worldwide.

Keep America Beautiful recognized UPS one of the world’s most respected brands for its leadership role in volunteerism and environmental sustainability. The Vision for America Award is presented annually to distinguished leaders of honored corporations, whose personal and corporate commitment have significantly enhanced civic, environmental and social stewardship throughout the United States. Commissioner John J. Doherty of the New York City Department of Sanitation and Keep New York City Beautiful joined Keep America Beautiful in recognizing UPS and Eskew for this honor.

Another factor in KAB’s selection of UPS was the company’s commitment to volunteerism, and its direct support of KAB’s recent Volunteer Management program. Responding to a growing need to retain high-quality volunteers, KAB executive directors and volunteer leaders across the country were trained using course guides, Webinars and workshops funded by the UPS Foundation. Volunteerism is a critical part of the UPS culture. The company’s Neighbor to Neighbor employee volunteer program alone logs nearly 1 million hours each year and UPS, its employees and retirees, have been the top contributor to United Way for seven years.

TNT Express wins Hanse Globe 2007 award

TNT Express has won the new “Hanse Globe 2007” award for sustainable logistics organised by the public-private body Logistik-Initiative Hamburg.

“Many companies have applied with their future-oriented projects,” commented Dr. Mojib Latif, professor for ocean circulation and climate dynamics at Leibniz Institute for sea sciences in Kiel and chairman of the jury. “TNT’s worldwide sustainability project ‘Planet me’ for the reduction of CO2 emissions was very convincing,” he said. “It comprises the whole TNT business worldwide, including 31 locations in Germany.”

In Germany, for example, TNT Express deploys 156 natural gas vehicles in cities that produce hardly any emissions, as well as ecological vans with soot particle filters and modern technologies for route optimizing.

Additionally, the company has invested in 60 video conference systems to reduce business trips, and builds new branches taking environmental issues into account. In the new Hamburg-Allermöhe depot, for example, an integrated leafy roof area makes for a better heat balance and a convenient micro-climate. Moreover, TNT minimises its consumption of water, energy and electricity.

The Logistik-Initiative Hamburg brings together some 300 companies and institutions in Hamburg with the aim of developing the city’s position as the leading logistics metropolis in Northern Europe.
