Postal services to start Hybrid mail next month

The Postal Services Department will be introducing a new service, Hybrid Mail, in November, Postmaster General Hj Abd Kadir Tengah disclosed recently.

Hybrid mail allows customers to send in their letters via e-mail to the department, which will then sort it out electronically, prints it and delivers it in physical form to the intended recipient.

The introduction of the service is to ensure the rapid process and delivery of letters to customers.

During the gathering, the postmaster general also mentioned the department’s progress since last year, in particular the 92 per cent rise in delivery services for the month of September 2007 alone.

The performance of their counter services, considered as the frontline of the postal department, is at their best, said the postmaster general, who added that the department is currently offering the best services to the public especially with the addition of modernised equipment such as automated counter services.

In addition to the upgrading of its equipment, the department is also constantly encouraging its human resource and service staff to improve them selves, so that the quality of service will also be upgraded.

Department employees are given the opportunity to join training programs whether in the country or overseas, to keep them up-to-date with the current postal processes and services available in the world.

Hj Abd Kadir pointed out two factors that are of importance to the progress and development of the department: courier services and ICT.

The postmaster general also highlighted the challenges that the department faces, in particular maintaining its overall sustainability.

The department is determined to maintain its focus on its overall services, especially its quality and functions, so that everything it does is relevant and appropriate towards its aim of becoming a communication hub and connecting the community.

IPC leads environmental sustainability initiative

The International Post Corporation (IPC) announced today at its bi-annual Board meeting in New York City, its plans to develop a three-tier program to address environmental sustainability among its member posts. The program will focus on developing common sector-wide definitions and measurement systems; conducting stakeholder research and communicating sector-wide advances in environmental sustainability throughout the postal industry.

“Climate change is no longer an issue of debate,” said Jean-Paul Bailly, chairman and CEO of Groupe La Poste in France and chairman of the IPC Board. “Two prominent areas for concern to postal operators and our industry stakeholders are the operation of extensive road and air transport networks and issues related to direct mail, a strategically critical business for posts.”

Mr. Bailly added, “Because of the sector-wide urgency of the issue, the IPC Board will devote its annual conference this May to develop a common environmental sustainability initiative and map the way forward for the postal industry.” The conference, Leadership through Sustainable Development: Postal Industry Challenges and Opportunities will take place on 29 and 30 May, 2008 in La Chapelle en Serval, France. CEOs representing 24 member postal organizations and several selected CEOs from both inside and outside the industry are expected to attend.

Last month, IPC conducted a members’ forum on the subject of environmental sustainability, where it was decided that IPC should take a leadership role in providing the platforms for members to come together to define the way forward for the sector.

IPC has been a leader in providing postal delivery measurement systems for nearly 20 years, we are the natural partner for the postal industry and it makes sense that we are the organization to develop a common system for environmental measurement and research among the posts,” said Herbert-Michael Zapf, CEO and president, IPC.

DHL opens distribution centre for Epson in Tilburg

DHL announced that Epson Europe, DHL Exel Supply Chain and ProLogis celebrate the opening of the new central distribution centre for Epson Europe. From this centre around tens of thousands of printers, video projectors and cash register systems are shipped to customers in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Russia on a daily basis. DHL is responsible for the logistics from the centre employing up to 400 people. The new warehouse, with 60 loading docks and a surface area of 60,000m2, is the property of ProLogis and was voted the “best looking” distribution center in the Netherlands by the Dutch publication, Nieuwsblad Transport.

“The warehousing activities of Epson Europe were performed at a number of different locations until recently,” says Denis Doyle, Operations Director for Epson Europe. “Two of these, the Maasvlakte and Hoofddorp, were managed by DHL. The centralization of our logistics warehouses will be beneficial for customers in the area of consolidated invoicing, direct shipment and reducing administration time. By consolidating our logistics we expect to achieve substantial savings, not only in terms of cost but also for the environment, which is an important step for Epson. We are much better able to utilize our transport capacity, contributing to a reduction in CO 2 emissions. We have always had an excellent working relationship with DHL, so we have plenty of confidence in our continued future together.”
