Securing sustainability of the network is now the issue

Postcomm, the independent regulator for postal services, has commented on the Governments long-term plans to safeguard the future of a viable and sustainable Post Office network.

Postcomm Chairman Nigel Stapleton said:

Steps to secure the long-term sustainability of the Post Office network must now be the priority. The Governments timetable for closures is ambitious and it is vital that, at the same time, Post Offices are being given the right range of services and products to give them a long term future. In order for it to survive, the Post Office network needs a clear vision, well trained and motivated people and associated set of commercial products and services.

Postcomms statutory role requires it to monitor developments in the Post Office network and provide advice to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, but it is not its role to make decisions on the future of either the network as a whole, or of any individual Post Office.

Postcomm aims to make sure that:

* Royal Mail provides universal access to postal services;
* the government has clear advice about developments in the Post Office network and its role;
* attention is focused not on Post Office numbers, but on making sure customers have sufficient access to Post Office services to meet their current and future needs; and
* the provision of Post Office services takes account of the needs of vulnerable groups and those living in isolated and deprived areas.

Postcomm issued a report, entitled Post Offices at the crossroads, in October 2006, which is available on the Postcomm website (www.psc.gov.uk).

DHL investigates the use of biodiesel for its fleet in the UK

A UK division of the international DHL logistics group, DHL Exel Supply Chain, has started to investigate the possibility of operating its delivery vehicles using 100% biodiesel.

DHL has undertaken this project in partnership with JD Wetherspoon and Argent Energy UK, a producer of biodiesel. The project will involve recycling and re-processing cooking oil, previously used to cook meals in Wetherspoons pubs, for further deliveries back into the pub estate.

Test runs on an initial trial vehicle will begin end of May to prove the feasibility and assess maintenance and operational requirements before rolling out the program to the wider distribution fleet.

Bill Bacon, National Account Director from DHL Exel Supply Chain said: “We are committed to being an environmentally responsible business and are always looking at innovative ways to create sustainable supply chains. This is a superb example of everyone’s collaboration into exploring new technologies and alternative fuels that could potentially lead the way into long term sustainability. As the leading provider of contract logistics services we have a responsibility to set best practise solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of our vehicles.”

Andy Hunter from Argent Energy, said: “We specialize in producing biodiesel by recycling by-products of other industries, specifically tallow and used cooking oil which are both by-products of the food industry. Our stringent quality assurance procedures ensure that all our output is of the highest quality and that we can produce biodiesel to customers’ precise specifications. More and more businesses are looking at ways to reduce their carbon footprint and we are delighted that our expertise has been called on in this innovative project.”

DHL UAE promotes natural gas fleet

Under the slogan “we travel naturally”, DHL has announced its plans to add compressed natural gas powered vans (CNGs) to its UAE express delivery fleet.
With natural gas continuing to develop as an alternative fuel of choice, and a forecast of 20 per cent natural gas share of road traffic fuel consumption in the UAE by 2012, the express and logistics leader is putting two environmentally-friendly units through a pilot testing phase as part of a plan to expand its UAE natural gas fleet in the coming years.

DHL UAE was recently upgraded to ISO 14001 accreditation, the internationally recognised standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS), after continuous extensive improvements.
Developments included advanced staff training to raise environmental awareness, as well as publishing DHL’s environmental policy as part of the parent company DPWN’s first sustainability report in June 2006, setting clear environmental objectives and targets.
Gasoline and diesel powered vehicles contribute to 80pc of environment pollution in the UAE followed by factories, a recent study conducted by the Strategic Planning Department for Transport at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai revealed.
